Feature - I would like to see!!! - More than any of you... by Damian_Longree on 05-16-2005 at 05:24 PM

Okay, - Here we go;

From time to time, - i't would be great for me to be able to remote shutdown my system, with out getting the plastic out to download expensive software.

- So, what I would like to see, is a feature that would possibly allow me to remote shutdown...

This is the proposed method:

- Account A is logged on to the system that I want shutdown, - (That is kept online - with plus! installed)

- Account B logs in, from any where in the world... - with the use of a webmessenger...

- Account B says to Account A something along this format:

      /shutdown $var_seconds $password

- Account A with messenger plus! - Recognises this - and does what it needs to do...

- Now, surely you can implement this to run the DOS Windows command

shutdown -s -t $var_seconds

- Also, for security reasons of cause, - this feature should have the option to be able to turn off and on... off for default...

- though, this feature would be nice...

-  Yes or No?

This is potentially dangerous as some one could hack into your system and remotly lock it. It probably will not be put into place and if you want to close your system down use Ctrl + Alt + Delete and log users off that way. Or use Remote Assistance

hmm... - wasn't exactly hard to get back in - after having a tempory ban on my other account...
Sorry, - but, - If one can't have a small joke in life - what's the point in living?

-----------------------------

okay, - ...
- well, Looking at this - it seems that a post has been 'looted'
saying that I no longer require this - and have created a PHP solution...

--- while also... - Remote Assistance has disadvanages:

- Techically - Remote Assistance is just as protentially Dangerous if not more!

- With remote assistance - more can be done, than just shutting down windows...

- To run remote assistance - you would need to get Account A to accept incoming connection... - the whole reason for this was for it to be 'remote'

- You simply need windows xp or better...

- Windows xp professional is needed for remote desktop...

- and what if your behind a port firewall or router?

------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Also, do notice - there is a "password" feature in the format...

While also... - it could be also possible for plus! - to only allow certain users or a 'master account' to be able to use the /shutdown command...

and - ... what are you on about?
Using CTRL + ALT  + DELETE - do log off users....

- Maybe your not catching the whole drift of the feature... - or maybe your just trying to be smart to try and out catch me? - or, you just simply can't read my post...

/*( hmm, I can see another temp ban coming along...)*/

-  The whole point of this was to be able to shutdown the computer...

anywhere!!!

- in the world... - so, CTRL + ALT + DEL is disregarded as a possible function...

- anyway...  - I've had enough of typing for one day... - I'm off...

cya....

Dude, evading bans isn't cool.

As mwe99 said, this is an EXTREMELY dangerous feature. If you really want a plugin to do this, just build it yourself. It's easy enough. Simply grab the Bot Developer Kit and then make an autoresponder to respond to !shutdown <password>. Or even better, make an IRC bot to do it. =\

Isn't there  a PC Anywhere package that does this too? I've not tested it as i don't feel secure accessing my PC from anywhere
Try this: http://www.gotomypc.com

By the way, evading bans will lead into a perm ban. Please be respectful.

If someone could hack into your system I don't think they would care about locking your MSN. People use the word 'hacking' like it happens every day.

But yes, I agree with you it is a security issue.

yes indeed.

The first thread about it:
Would you use this plugin?
And the second thread:
Shutdown Computer Plugin (Screen Shots)

Both threads contain important information and discussions about such a plugin and possible security issues. I recommend to read those two threads before discussing this kind of thing further as most (if not all) questions are already explained and answered in detail in those old threads...

The plugin itself isn't available anymore though...

Oh ya, I forgot about fixing this plugin to work on Windows 2000. Maybe I should get around to doing it and release the plugin. Might be a good idea.
