Make sure all power is disconnected (obviously) and make sure no static electricity is around there otherwise the result would be shocking :P

This may be of some help: http://www.computerhope.com/cleaning.htm

Make sure you spray your compressed air away from the PC before using it on the PC to avoid condensation being disloged into the PC.
Make sure your PC isn't hot (compressed air can get very cold).

i have some compressed air i use opn my keyboard... it sometimes sprays out some white, freezing liquid(i think its like liquid) that goes away when u breathe on it...

be careful if yours does this im not sure what it would do to your pc...

do you think it would be worth getting a pcworld to do it (a local computer shop)?

Instead of going to a shop look for a tutorial :)

Just a simple Google search some bring some results back.

If still in doubt - then contact a local PC shop

And WDZ you're mad :P you might get shocked :O

for the best use of compressed air:

Never spray to close to components; keep your distance. Compressed air can be very powerfull and nock of or damage things if you spray too close to them. Use your own judgement for the distance to keep your can from the PC... This will also solve the cold air problem which some people talked about.

Use, if possible, also a vacuum cleaner to suck up the dust your blowing away. Using compressed air has the big disadvantage that you blow the dust from one part to other parts. And even in a bad case scenario, you blow dust inside components where it will be trapped forever, so be very carefull! For this it is again important not to spray you compressed air to close to the PC and use a powerfull vacuum cleaner to suck up the flying dust...

Other then that, NEVER directly touch components of your PC without a decent anti-static wristband or something (or holding another large metal grounded object like the central heating unit in the room).

* CookieRevised whistles .... :D

I'll do it also, but I'm also smart enough to not touch anything while doing it ;)

(but for a very good cleanout you still need to touch, tilt, unscrew, etc.. so power must be off for that though)

depends on how clean the environment is the PC is in. (one of my PC's needs a very big cleaning every month because it is in a very dusty and smokey room and the case is always open)

RE: cleaning computer out inside by user35870 on 05-16-2005 at 09:15 PM

well last time I was fitting my graphics card i noticed a lot of dust around the cpu fan and case fan but I didn't have any compressed air then.

also on neowin i was adviced to clean it because I have been having alot of problems like (programs not responding  ,slow downs etc.)

Yeah, I agree. What I do is put one hand near the PC and blow the air at my hand to see how much force there is.

My PC is about the same age, and I've cleaned it multiple times... there was lots of dust in there. I guess it depends on how dusty your house is and how much you use the PC (how much the fans are running). :-/

Static Electricity so you should always touch something (like cookie advised)

pretty sure it is. i know with mine if its upside down or shaken while spraying it expells something cold, liquidy, and flamable (heh.)

RE: cleaning computer out inside by user35870 on 05-16-2005 at 09:21 PM

thanks wdz and cookie i'm to scared to do it (millions of things could go wrong). I might just get the local computer shop to do it.

RE: cleaning computer out inside by Plik on 05-16-2005 at 09:27 PM

well as long as you follow cookies advice you will be fine, also if you pc has a metal case touching that should be enough to get rid of any static energy, just make sure your not doing it whilst dancing in a nylon jogging suit in a thunder storm

RE: cleaning computer out inside by CookieRevised on 05-16-2005 at 09:29 PM

Indeed.... Don't be scared though. It is easy enough if you just practice a bit (on some other stuff), and like WDZ said, start from a distance and holding your hand near the PC and test how much force there is in the airflow. Not much can go wrong if you just use common sense ;)

Obviously, he doesn't touch anything inside the PC when he's doing the cleaning while the PC is running.... (ofcourse, don't try this at home kids :P)

RE: cleaning computer out inside by Concord Dawn on 05-17-2005 at 01:13 AM

Erm, a vacuum/compressed air combo is the best way to go. Just run the vacuum near the PC a few times (a shop vac is good for this as their very powerful) to get rid of all the loose dust. Then get the compressed air and attach the little straw thing for precision blowing and blow away all the dust you see. Then get the vacuum again and suck away all the dust you loosened up.
