sound like either hardware damage.. or a virus infection

have you tried pressing F8 at startup and selecting use my last settings that worked in the boot menu

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damageto your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen apears agian follow these steps:

CHeck for virues on your computer. Remove any newly installed hardrives or hard drive controllers. Check your hardrive to make sure it is properlyconfigured and terminated.
Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

unless,
put your XP disk in, and do a repair install when it asks if you wannt Run a repair install

note that its not the repair console you want.. continue as you would normallydo for a fresh install and it will detect windows already on there and ask if you wanna run a repair install

do the repair install

Okay, turn it off and put the disk in... turn in back on with the disk already inserted and it should ask you do you wish to boot from the cd

Yeh, it will say "press any button to boot from disk" and you get 5 seconds to press any button.

Try getting into the BIOS setup (that's F1 or DEL button, I think).

Then go and change the boot order.
Put CD-ROM first

RE: computer cant startup..please help! by - keef on 05-20-2005 at 09:22 PM

how do u change the boot order?

RE: computer cant startup..please help! by squall_leonhart69r on 05-20-2005 at 10:32 PM

its normally in advanced or system settings in the bios

To change the boot order, turn your computer on and start tapping DEL untill you are on a blue screen.

I can't tell you the exact thing to go on because my keyboard has gone all weird.. but try all of them untill you find one that has something like

First - HDD-1
Second - CD-ROM
Third - Floppy

Remember to change it back to the Hard Drive after you've booted from the CD.

If you do what other people have said and put the CD in first, that should work. But if it doesn't, try this.

Hope that helps.

its not Del for all machines... some use F1....

others.. notably toshiba sattelite laptops you need to hold escape then press F1 or Del

What kind of computer are you actually running?

I am suprisied no one has made mention of the Micorosoft Article for this problem: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324103

I suggest you contact your computer vendor for further assistance.
