windows commands doesn't work by rix on 05-21-2005 at 09:35 AM

I post one user's problems with fresh windows XP:

Windows commands and Ctrl+Alt+Delete doesn't work at all. I can't install even Antivirus and other software. Any ideas?

This sounds like it could be a virus, but there are a lot of them that disable task manager. Are there any error messages when Ctrl Alt Del are pressed?

If you look in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 directory, check to see if taskman and taskmgr file are there. Try opening taskmgr as well. What exactly happens? Any error messages?

If task manager still isn't running from here, try looking at these sites

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/kbase/Win...indows2000.html

http://www.infopackets.com/gazette/2003/20...2000_and_xp.htm

These sites above have some settings you can change to enable task manager.

This site, http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_taskmgrenab.htm has a exe file which i tried and it worked perfectly. It allows you to disable or enable task manager.

Try booting up into safe mode (when booting keep hiting the "f8" button) and try and see if it works in there.

    *  Click Start -> Run. Type in "regedit" (no quotes) and hit Enter.

    * Search for HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ System.

    * Look for: DisableTaskMgr. Click on REG_DWORD. Value: 1=Enable this key (disables TaskManager); Value: 0=Disable (actually enables TaskManager)

    * Close RegEdit

    * Reboot your machine.

Command 'regedit' doesn't work. And also 'regedit32' and 'msconfig'.

Then find regedit.exe in C:\Windows (or one of it's subfolders: me no know where).

Regedit, regedit32, msconfig doesn't work even if I start them from their location (WINDOWS/system32). Strangely it all works in Safe Mode.

It works in safe probably because there is a virus or something stopping these things being opened.

In safe mode, this virus won't have started up, so the commands work.

Okay, Safe Mode and it's comptatibilites saved my day. I installed antivirus and it found couple of hundred unneeded dodgers.

Thanks, who helped! :)

this may help people with the same problem. it copies the taskmanager, regedit, and msconfig files to a folder on c so that if a virus is disableing the defaults they can still be used.
