Forum moods by Yousef on 05-23-2005 at 04:16 PM

Just want to share an idea that crossed my mind.
The moods in msn messenger change according to the emoticons you use.
Would it be nice to see something like this for standard forums? I think it's a quite unique idea to let a bot check the smileys you use in posts, and adapt your mood-rate likewise, and then change your avatar picture which is located at the same server.
Or maybe just an extension to mybboard for example, but I don't have much experience with that.

Anyway, it would probably waste way too much traffic ;)

Yes but optional...:P

RE: Forum moods by Chris4 on 05-23-2005 at 04:35 PM

Hmm. Nice idea but it would be quite hard for them to make that work :P

I think I would have the technical abilities to make such thing. But I'm not planning to make it very soon, just wanted to check whether people would like it :)

And what about posts like yours? With multiple smileys?

:):(:D:P;)*-)

What would you do for this post?

Don't worry: I'm not trying to put you down. I'm just making people aware of the problems.

RE: Forum moods by Yousef on 05-23-2005 at 05:37 PM

What about msn messages with multiple smileys? Just count all the smileys individual.

Example:
:'( = mood -2
:( = mood -1
:) = mood +1
:D = mood +2

You could also have multiple categories, so you can log the times specific emoticons will be used. i.e. when someone uses :$ a lot, his avatar could be changed into a shy version. Same for  :S.

Or like a love-category, counting (f)(l)(k)(u)(w)

i do think its a creative and unique idea, however i wouldn't want my picture changing, so definintely optional :) this should have been posted in Forum and Website bit btw

RE: Forum moods by CookieRevised on 05-23-2005 at 07:28 PM

and what about emoticons in posts etc...

I like the initial idea though, it would be original for a forum. But the way it works on MSN Messenger isn't a good way to let it work on a forum....

It could be done much easier also, just an easy accessible setting somewhere (top bar?) where you can select your mood. And the mood would show somewhere in the box where your avatar is (not replacing the avatar).

it worx on msn messenger? where?
RE: Forum moods by Chris4 on 05-23-2005 at 07:34 PM

Yeh I like CookieRevised idea.

Maybe there could be 3 options.

1st Option - Disabled [regular avatar]
2nd Option - automatic mood change
3rd Option - (as said above) choose your mood from dropdown menu.

With Dynamic Display Pictures, they react to your emoticons

RE: Forum moods by Jhrono on 05-23-2005 at 08:14 PM

You are forgetting one thing...this doesnt work as msn does...When you make the :) emo in msn, the ddp gets all smiley and bla bla...
Now in forums, when you post and put the :D emo, it would change ur avatar in every place u had posted before, so where u posted :( would become :)...got it?

Solution :

User A posts :) in thread AA...So, in that post, in thread AA,his avatar remains :) Forever...1 minute later the same user A posts in thread AB, with the :( emo...so like in thread AA his avtar will be :( forever...

Now i dont think that'd be a good idea..phearps a field, bellow your Post count, Reputation, Age, Sex, Joining date and status, saying, POST MOOD = :D, :), or anything

RE: Forum moods by Yousef on 05-23-2005 at 08:40 PM

I understand the problem Johny, but the mood avatar could just show the 'current mood'. And of course it could show an 'average mood' of for example the 5 latest posts.

RE: Forum moods by CookieRevised on 05-23-2005 at 08:55 PM

It still wouldn't work decently.... Like I said, they way it is in MSN Messenger can not be copied to a forum, it will never work that way...

btw, and I can be in a very bad mood, while still posting a message with :) to someone in a friendly thread....

And also, reacting on emoticons only enlarges the urge of people to post message with a lot of useless emoticons...

RE: Forum moods by saralk on 05-23-2005 at 09:02 PM

what about a drop down box under each post which lets you choose from a list of moods.

Well, maybe the word 'mood' is wrong then, but it doesn't affect the idea.

There you made a point.
I realise the whole idea must be well-thought, but it's not the time for that now, I'm going to sleep :p

Cool, but it could be contraditory, if you posted something with ':)' and your mood was 'Angry' :P...

The best solution is cookies one :
