firefox = win

RE: Internet IE Explorer by Caboose on 05-24-2005 at 12:42 AM

It all depends on you. If you're happy with IE, stick with IE. If you're curious as to what the hype's all about, get Firefox. I haven't looked back since I switched :)

Yeah, I don't like it when people say "OMFG FIREFOX IS TEH UBER SECURE!!!1!!11" or something similar :dodgy:. FF is no more or less secure then IE is, it's just that IE is by far the more popular browser so many more attacks are directed towards it. But now that Firefox has picked up a lot of steam, there'll be more and more attacks towards FF, as well as spyware.

Personally, I use it for the extensions. You can do almost anything you want with them, and I can't surf without it now. Same with tabbed browsing (Y)(Y)

RE: Internet IE Explorer by zach on 05-24-2005 at 05:26 AM

I use Firefox and I have noticed that spybot sometimes detects "Backweb lite", which isn't good. It slows down my mouse.

Edit:

quote:
Backweb Lite is a known adware installed by Logitech, or Kodak.
So it's unrelated with Firefox.

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/1115185030

My advice is, check your system if you have installed something probably mentioned in the link above.

Ahh, Okay. That'll be my brothers new camera.

Edit: just a side note, using a less-attacked browser doesn't mean you are free from spyware, adware or viruses. It is all down to how you manage your computer :)

RE: Internet IE Explorer by -Bogan- on 05-24-2005 at 07:51 AM

Firefox=great

Reasons to channge to firefox can be seen at:

http://www.stopie.com

the unsafeness of IE will amaze you.

RE: Internet IE Explorer by um............... on 05-24-2005 at 08:04 AM

firefox is by far the winner:P

but you still need an ie like browser like maxthon because of some sites^o)

-You mean "But you still need a browser like maxthon because of some sites?"
I haven't found a site that I need to change to IE to view... Oh wait, some site a better viewed in IE because the way the images are placed on the page.

http://www.stopie.com/ieshells/ -That page is interesting. It also says something about Maxthon
"Basically, when using an IE shell (Avant, Maxthon, SlimBrowser and the likes) you are equally at risk to all the spyware, adware and general malware that IE allows to leak through."

-
I do use IE sometimes though. There must be a way around those problems.
RE: Internet IE Explorer by um............... on 05-24-2005 at 08:15 AM

no not really, parts of hotmail don't display correctly in firefox
and the activex plugins don't work on firefox
also you can't even view some sites eg-windows update?

RE: Internet IE Explorer by -Bogan- on 05-24-2005 at 08:25 AM

I have found some sites that don't let you download because you use FF. You can't get rid of IE anyway with Windows because it's built into the operating system and I find it stuffs up XP.

Unless you install an extension that enables it.
RE: Internet IE Explorer by -Bogan- on 05-24-2005 at 10:13 AM

yeah but that the fact that FF doesn't have active X makes it safer which defeats the purpose.

RE: RE: Internet IE Explorer by rav0 on 05-25-2005 at 11:12 AM

:o Guess what! I use Opera! (H)

Hotmail will not send the whole page that it sends to Internet Explorer, just to get users to switch. They want people to switch to Internet Explorer, but I think that more people just switch away from Hotmail. I am a Gmail user, but the Hotmail restrictions in non-IE browsers didn't exist when I switched, Gmail kicked Hotmail anyway.

ActiveX is a Microsoft-patented technology. That is why it is not in Firefox, Opera, Konquerer etc. Well, Microsoft kind of stole the patent, but that's besides the point ATM.

Windows Update (Microsoft Update) is ActiveX based, and needs to be, so that it can change your system files. I explained above why ActiveX isn't in Firefox.

You don't have to pay for Opera: there is an ad-supported free version. It's not built on Java AFAIK, and anyway, what's wrong with Java? It's a popular, good quality language!
Also, Opera is highly secure (much more than IE anyway), and is in a number of ways better than Firefox.

Can we stop these petty browser wars already?
Opera = good
Firefox = good
IE = not so good
QED

You can choose to pay for Opera, otherwise you can choose to have web-based advertisments displayed a a small pane. I chose to have the advertisments provided by Google, and they are not intrusive at all.

Where did that come from? Opera is not built in Java. If it were, is there something wrong with that?

Firefox has a 4.7 MB installer. Opera has a 3.6 MB installer. Firefox requires 52 MB of hard disk space to install. Opera uses 5.2 MB of hard disk space.

The features provided by the most popular extentions for Firefox are already built into Opera.

What makes Firefox's tabbed browsing better than that of Opera? In Windows, Opera uses native Windows MDI. Firefox uses its own emulation to provide tabbed browsing.

Note:
I don't hate Firefox. I just like Opera better. I think that Firefox is also a decent browser, and have become a Spread Firefox member. The purpose of this post is to deny incorrect information. If someone has a correction, please post it.
