When I log on to my file on XP, the usual startup stuff loads (messenger, firewall etc...) and windows ALWAYS springs open a folder (same one every time). How do I stop it doing this? Thanks in advance.

In the explorer window, go to Tools / Options / View tab / uncheck Restore previous folder windows at logon
See if that helps

umm check your startup folder
either:
Start > All Programs > Startup
or:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\start menu\programs\startup
if there are any folders in here they will be opened on startup

Tis already unchecked caboose. 
Tried the other things, nothing funny in startup, or the startup on msconfig.
Thanks for quick responses though! Any other ideas?

What folder opens at startup?
For me, when my pc starts up, the windows messenger folder always opens and i can't find anything that would make this happen.
