Well i've set my away status to 40 messages
There is a limit to the number of letters and numbers you use though
Maybe try cutting down the size of some of your messages and see if you can add more

No effect
Even if I enter messages of only 1 character they stop after the 9th

Yep there is a limit, as described in Messenger Plus! Change Logs: 2.10.34 Version - 02/05/2003, that you can only use 9 multiple away messages in one personalised status. And I remember that this never changed since then
