Plus won't run!! by Saranwrap7 on 06-14-2005 at 09:59 AM

I'm really hoping that someone can help!  I'm basically starting fresh on a new hardrive on my old comp, and Plus has always run fine...always had it.  I've tried to download it (since I'm starting from scratch) but after it's downloaded it won't run.  I've tried about 6 times now, saving it in three different places, all with the same result.  I'll click on the file, and only hear an internal comp beep, and nothing will happen.  Why is this happening???  It was suggested that it could be a firewall problem, but my Windows firewall is off and if my Norton has one...I can't find it.

The download goes well...just can't open the damn thing once I've got it.  H_E_L_P!!!

Make sure the download isn't corrupted and that you download from the official site only.

To check if your download is legimate and not corrupted:
1) Right click the setup file in Windows Explorer and choose "properties"
2) Go then click on the "Digital Signature" tab
3) Select the signature in the list.
4) Double click the selected signature or click on the "Details" button you'll see under the list.
5) The signature is being validated now, and a next screen is shown. On top of it you'll see if the signature is ok or not. If it is not, you have a corrupted and/or infected setupfile...

note: firewalls don't cause these kind of problems. Faulty downloads with download managers, tools to "speed up" downloads and virusses are the ones to blame...

Okay...I did all that, and it said that the digital signature is okay, as well as the certificate.  I even went so far as to install the certificate (whatever that does), but still nothing.  Any more suggestions.  This is becoming a weird obsession now to get this to install!  LOL

What is your Windows version?

And can you list all the programs which are running? (If you have XP, make a screenshot of the processes list, by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL and going to the processes tab)

I'm sending you an email in the hopes of making this a little quicker.

It's XP professional and I've only been using it since Sunday when the new hardrive was installed.  I made a JPEG of the screen shot of the Task Manager, but it's too big to upload.  Here's what going on...

I don't even know what half this stuff is!

I can't believe that it still won't run!!  So far I've now downloaded it about seven times, saving it in different places on two different hard drives, I checked the signature and the certificate, I've tried opening it after starting my system in safe mode, and after turning off my Norton Anti-Virus.  What else can I possibly try to make this program install?!?  HELP ME!!!!!!:(8o|

I would try
1) restarting the computer
2) Closing any non-essential processes
3) Deleting the setup file from my Temporary Internet Files folder and re-downloading it

and if it still wouldn't work.. hmm.. *-)

Try running the install in compaitbility mode.

Right Click on the Installer > Properties > Compatibility Tab >

Check off Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 2000
And Disable Visual Themes

Click Apply and try and rerun the installer.

I know this may sound stupid but: did you try restarting your computer?

RE: Plus won't run!! by Saranwrap7 on 06-15-2005 at 11:22 AM

Well I still haven't made it install yet...but I think we're getting somewhere.  I tried the compatibility mode, thing, and this time I recieved an error message saying that the minimum requirements weren't met.  It said I needed to download and run Messenger 4.6 or higher (eventhough I'm running 7.0) but hey!  At least we're getting somewhere...I think.  I'm redownloading Messenger 7 now, and we'll see what happens(Y)

RE: Plus won't run!! by ZrednaZ on 06-15-2005 at 12:37 PM

Maybe you'll wanna try reinstalling Windows Messenger, too? Not that I see why this should make a difference, but hey.. :D

RE: Plus won't run!! by Saranwrap7 on 06-15-2005 at 01:29 PM

Well...crap.  I just spent the last hour and a half re-downloading Messenger 7.0 (dial-up connection that never gets any higher than 28.8kbps) and I recieved this error message when it was finished:

Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file.  You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

                                           :blah:
Why am I having so much trouble with this?!?  First Messenger Plus, and now Messenger 7...which I was running before without problem, I might add.  Anything I can do?????

RE: Plus won't run!! by cantuchthis on 06-15-2005 at 02:37 PM

Are you an administrator on your comp? Becuase if not then maybe that is  the reason you cant access it or whatever.

RE: Plus won't run!! by Saranwrap7 on 06-15-2005 at 02:41 PM

Yes I am.  I don't know what's going on.   The problem now is that it thinks that I'm running a Messenger less that 4.6 (eventhough I had 7.0 installed)  I've now deleted all the MSN Messenger files, and Windows Messenger files, and I'm redownloading the MSN Messenger...wish me luck, I'll let ya know.

Alright,  MSN Messenger is now up and running (version 7.0), but still when I try to run Messenger Plus it sais that I need to run version 4.6 or higher.  Why isn't it recognizing the right version number?

When I tried downloading msn messenger for the second time, the same thing happened again.  I tried repairing it from the Control Panel, but it didn't work, just kept giving me more error messages.  I just tried to do a system restore, back to Sunday, but for some reason it didn't work, and it said that nothing was changed.  The only good thing was that messenger now works, but still, Plus won't run.  It's like it's not detecting my messenger 7.  PLEASE TELL ME WHAT TO DO !!

RE: Plus won't run!! by lucialee on 06-15-2005 at 03:29 PM

I had the same problem before, and I solved it just now by reinstalling the MSN Messenger. And did you run the install in compaitbility mode? Because running in the compaitbility mode would make the installation unsuccessful.

RE: Plus won't run!! by Saranwrap7 on 06-15-2005 at 03:34 PM

I've got the Messenger Plus set to compatibilty mode...that's how I finally started getting the error message about the Messenger version number (before it wouldn't do anything at all).  Is there a way to run Messenger in compatibility mode?  It always just starts to open the download automatically from the web page??

Alright here's the scoop now...maybe someone can help.  It still seems that Messenger Plus can't detect my Messenger...either of them, MSN or Windows (I restored it from the Recycle Bin).  I tried twice to download MSN messenger, and both times there was something wrong with the download.  I went into Add/Remove Programs and tried to repair it, but got this message:

"The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file: C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\nudge.wav"

Then the MSN installer window came back saying that the program had not been installed.  Hit OK, and a window pops up saying "A Fatal Error Has Occured"...(the program has been running fine...)

When I tried to uninstall MSN Messenger and try again I got this:

"The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file:  C:\Program Files\MSN  Messenger\License.rtf"

I thought I would try running Windows Messenger and see what happens with the Plus, because the error I get from Plus says I need "MSN/Windows Messenger 4.6 (minimum) installed".  I opened Windows Messenger and was notified of a download that I must have to continue...fine.  The Download finished, but nothing happened...it still says that  I'm running Windows messenger 4.0.   I tried downloading the update three times, and the same thing kept happening...the download never worked...therefore I still can't  install the Messenger Plus either.

Why am I having so much trouble with this?!?  What is it that I'm missing??  Why does it say that my MSN is having fatal errors, but it still runs and works fine?  I'm logged in right now, using Version 7.0 (Build 7.0.0813)  Someone has gotta know what's going on...???:wall:
