RAM Problem :( by Reaper on 06-15-2005 at 10:43 AM

I just recieved 1 stick of  1Gb of RAM. When i put it in my computer, the BIOS beeps sound. I have 2 ports for my memory, i took one stick of 256Mb RAM out and put the 1Gb one in. i tried all combinations of the other 256Mg stick and the ports.
There were about 6 BIOS beeps, and im running on Phoenix BIOS. I know its RAM failure but how can i fix the problem?
Could the voltage for the RAM be to high, do i need to turn it down?

RE: RAM Problem :( [Solved] by Reaper on 06-15-2005 at 11:04 AM

yeh its PC2100. at the moment im running on the same comp but with 512Mb so it rules out mobo problems.

[Edit] I realised the problem. i checked my computer manual and it said it cant support a single 1Gb module, im going to need to buy 2 x 512Mbs -.-'

£45 down the drain :(

send it back, you are allowed to do that you know, or didn't you?

RE: RAM Problem :( by Reaper on 06-15-2005 at 11:52 AM

yeh i emailed the guy i bought it from but he might not allow returns. if that does happen im gonna need to list it on ebay

RE: RAM Problem :( by Nathan on 06-15-2005 at 12:10 PM

RE: RAM Problem :( by Reaper on 06-15-2005 at 12:35 PM

RE: RAM Problem :( by squall_leonhart69r on 06-15-2005 at 01:16 PM

um.. it wouldn't actually say low on ram

have you got your page file set to low? coz thats what would cause that message

Sometimes you can get a message something like
quote:
System is low on memory so Windows is increasing the pagefile size
or
quote:
Not every memory to run application, shut some programs and trey again

RE: RAM Problem :( by squall_leonhart69r on 06-15-2005 at 01:36 PM

"System is low on memory so Windows is increasing the pagefile size"

this is NOT due to memory size at all, but becoz windows runs out of pagefile space

i get this whenever i disable my pagefile or run with it to low

"Not every memory to run application, shut some programs and trey again"

this is also an occurence when the page file is off or set to low

it is also common on Win9x systems due to the way windows pages programs instead of using the page file it stores them in Virtual memory using the system and user.gdi files which you can monitor by installing the Resource meter in the add remove programs under windows setup

RE: RAM Problem :( by Reaper on 06-15-2005 at 02:43 PM

isnt it the best idea when u get those messages to add some more RAM? Nowadays 256Mb of RAM is kinda low. The min should be at least 512Mb

RE: RAM Problem :( by MeEtc on 06-15-2005 at 02:46 PM

Something similar happened to me before. When the RAM was removed, I'm guessing it recieved a shock of static and killed the RAM. Luckily, it was on warranty and got it replaced.

Faulty RAM or you shocked it while putting it in...

RE: RAM Problem :( by squall_leonhart69r on 06-15-2005 at 03:23 PM

no Reaper. the best idea is to check the pagefile settings

WindowsXP can survive just fine on 64mbs as long as it has enough pagefile space

and with Windows 9x, the extra ram doesn't really matter as processes aren't stored in ram but in the gdi files

RE: RAM Problem :( by Ezra on 06-15-2005 at 03:30 PM

What's that for crazy talk :S

More RAM is always better :P, But because Windows and all kind of programs use a lot of ram a pagefile was made, to free RAM memory and don't kill off processes and programs...

So, if you have more RAM the less of the pagefile (virtual memory) it needs to use...

If windows says the pagefile is too small... It means that your RAM is full and the pagefile too and it still needs memory so it makes the pagefile bigger to load more of the unused processes in the pagefile and free the RAM...

RE: RAM Problem :( by squall_leonhart69r on 06-15-2005 at 03:49 PM

in some cases yes

but then again i have 512 mbs of memory and i can have like 128mbs free and if the pagefile is disabled or set to low it'll tell me its increasing the size or to enable it due to not enough ram

but then again i've also found that certain programs i have, will actually cause this if they crash, as well

That's just because it makes sure it will allways have enough memory
RE: RAM Problem :( by squall_leonhart69r on 06-15-2005 at 04:39 PM

exactly

which is what im saying
maybe the pagefile is too low

and people saying set it to 1.5x the memory in your system are just dumbasses coz letting windows set the default size sets it to 1.5x the amount of memory

RE: RAM Problem :( by Nathan on 06-15-2005 at 04:54 PM

Ahhh but I have this thing which measures your RAM and it's always on full . Making my pc really slow. And i mean slow

RE: RAM Problem :( by Reaper on 06-15-2005 at 05:08 PM

hmmm. msg_plus_freak, have u checked wot type of RAM u need if u gonna buy it from me :P such as PC2100, PC2700, PC3200?!

RE: RAM Problem :( by Nathan on 06-15-2005 at 05:55 PM

YEp I have! Ill send a screen shot

Is that right? I think it is! Oh and how much will you sell it for?

RE: RAM Problem :( by Reaper on 06-15-2005 at 05:58 PM

:D:D i think £60 should cut it
let me no if thats ok or if u wanna haggle lol
also how u gonna pay? have u got paypal?

RE: RAM Problem :( by squall_leonhart69r on 06-15-2005 at 06:00 PM

theres no way it would be on full

the page file wouldn't allow that to happen

windows never allows it to get to below 20mbs

RE: RAM Problem :( by Nathan on 06-15-2005 at 06:02 PM

Wait a minute if you paied 45 pounds for it then why you selling it for more than 45? 60's just a bit over the top ;)

RE: RAM Problem :( by Reaper on 06-15-2005 at 06:21 PM
