Burning files to DVDR by aNILEator on 06-20-2005 at 01:09 PM

OK feeling really n00bish now but i have a collection of files that i want to burn to dvd but windows doesn't recognise that there is a blank dvd in my drive

the files are avi's BUT I DON'T WANT TO BURN THEM AS A DVD MOVIE FOR DVD PLAYERS/TV USE etc

but yeah anyone know some free software or how to fix windows inbuilt feature?

EDIT incase some people are confused the inbuilt feature i'm talking about is right click->send to->Drive (:E)

:)

Are you sure you have a DVD-burner?

And for burning software Nero is really good, it's not free... but it's worth it

RE: Burning files to DVDR by aNILEator on 06-20-2005 at 02:32 PM

yes i do have a DVD +/- RW Drive i've used it many times before hand :P

i'm 'buying' nero now :dodgy:

RE: Burning files to DVDR by [MR] on 06-20-2005 at 03:01 PM

have you tried another dvd-r b/c the first one could of be defective.

RE: Burning files to DVDR by aNILEator on 06-20-2005 at 03:48 PM

Yeah everythings good and nero is working it now so meh

although not too happy about this

Complete file size : 4556 MB
Disc Size : 4483 MB and all the discs i have are like this

DVD's should be 4.7GB shouldn't they?

so now i'm RAR-ing them and hope that will cut it down enough

Anyway other than that I'm not bothered about anything else now

RE: Burning files to DVDR by Matti on 06-20-2005 at 03:58 PM

DVD-R creators are weird, believe me! :S

Normally, 1 GB = 1024 MB
But, DVD-R creators round it up to 1000 MB, what is very confusing!
So, the size isn't 4.7 GB but around 4.4 GB.

And I dont think DVD players knows what RAR is... :dodgy:

i had this problem, it wouldnt recognise the disc was ther

it was because i have a +dvd-r drive and the discs were -DVD-r

RE: Burning files to DVDR by aNILEator on 06-20-2005 at 08:02 PM

merrr RARing it only got it down by 46MB :dodgy:

The message now is

Data to be written : 4507
Space on the Disc : 4482

it really is just taking the piece of cake.......

that was RAR on BEST compression anyone know how to get it down those last few MB's?

no i don't want to go RAR-ing every file then RAR them as a big file, and i don't think it would get it down enough anyway :(

RE: Burning files to DVDR by multimillion2k on 06-22-2005 at 03:24 AM

you could try compressiong them in the 7z/7-zip format, it may make a big difference. Don't try compressing compressed files, contrary to popular belief if you zip a file enough times, you won't eventually get it to 1 byte :)

Nero also supports overburning, some people claim that they can get up to 50mb extra, but that would depend on the brand of DVD you are burning to and possibly the drive you have too.

RE: Burning files to DVDR by rav0 on 06-22-2005 at 08:26 AM

I don't think that the Windows XP inbuilt feature supports DVD.

RE: Burning files to DVDR by squall_leonhart69r on 06-22-2005 at 10:28 AM

no it doesn't

the imapi service only covers disk of 650 and 700mbs

you will need a third party program such as Nero, Roxio, Alcohol XXX%, or one of the other lesser known engines

RE: Burning files to DVDR by aNILEator on 06-22-2005 at 11:06 PM

fucking hell 7-zipping isn't worth the hassle its just been going 8 hours and is at 1% wtf is up with that

RE: Burning files to DVDR by TazDevil on 06-22-2005 at 11:15 PM

Well Nero has an overburn feature... to burn more data to the disc / BUT, it is not always safe...

to enable nero 6 -> File \Preferences\ Extra Features \
(Y) Enable DVD overburning
(Y) Enable generation of short lead out...

Also it is always beter to create, cd's dvd's with Disk at once and not Track at Once as they skip the session headers and stuff that take space on the media...

If WinRAR almost got the files to fit, just try again, the amount of compression you get is never the same, maybe you will be lucky.

You could always burn another disk ;).

It is always the same! Compression is not a game of chance! When you compress a file and you later compress the original file again with the same settings, it will be exactly the same, bit by bit. Compressing is pure maths, there is no "lucky" factor in it...

Yeap if you want to achieve better results you must adjust Winarar settings (by setting it to make BEST compression, it will take a bit longer but there will be a small % gain... depending on the format of your files everytime..

You should try overburning i suggested above though....
RE: Burning files to DVDR by squall_leonhart69r on 06-24-2005 at 12:18 PM

use winace 2.0 compression instead

it has way better compression compared to winrar, i use it all the time, comparing one 5 mb file i was able to achieve a compressioin of 2mb in winace, compared to 3.5mb in winrar

Sorry. It was like that in my experience, but obviously, I had not kept all the settings the same.

No compression method will be always better than others.
RE: Burning files to DVDR by aNILEator on 06-30-2005 at 11:45 AM

i already said that it was on BEST settings

7 Zipping just took an age and in the end i cancelled it after 20hours and only a few % complete

i'd still like to fit the rar onto one disc

RE: Burning files to DVDR by CookieRevised on 06-30-2005 at 12:03 PM

Either:
* tweak your burning process with Nero or the likes, and don't use the build in feature of Windows
* strip some files from the archive
* split the file(s) over multiple dvd's
* find another method of compressing the files
* buy a double layered dvd writer and dvd disc

you got no other choice...

If it is that important for it to fit onto one disk, you could buy a dual layer disk.

Don't everyone start telling me that dual layer disks are expensive, he only needs one, just for this case.
RE: Burning files to DVDR by lordy on 07-01-2005 at 08:49 AM

That's assuming the DVD Burner is a DL burner... and the built in thing for Win XP doesnt recognise DVD's, that is going to be one of the new things in Longhorn

RE: Burning files to DVDR by aNILEator on 07-01-2005 at 11:57 PM

I'm just going to compress every file seperately and see how that goes :D

RE: Burning files to DVDR by rav0 on 07-02-2005 at 01:27 AM

Probably not very well, because each archive will have the same overhead data, plus the compressed file inside. But maybe if you compress those archives ... I don't know.

RE: Burning files to DVDR by TazDevil on 07-02-2005 at 01:35 AM

OK since the compressing theory doesnot work for you, you might want to RE-ENCODE or CROP some of your AVI files to a lower video or bitrate, which would free some space for you...

a nice free program would be ... VirtualDub -> http://www.virtualdub.org/index

give it a try it is very good...
