Did Msn messenger mess up my sound? by starkicker on 06-23-2005 at 02:28 AM

Hello... I was gonna have a voice conversation for msn messenger for the first time, I guess I had to use the tuning wizard to set it up, when I did that I realized my mic doesn't work... but now ever since I did that there is something wrong with my sound.... when I listen to music or anything it sounds like its in a hall and there's a really bad echo, I can't even watch a movie...I removed messenger and I still have the problem..... anyone know how i can get my sound back to normal??
thanks

Yes, all my settings are correct. I didn't even change anything in the first place.

Sounds as if your microphone is still on, and its giving feedback. Just mute the mic channel under volume control when you're not trying to use it

I've muted my mic, unplugged it... still sounds like crap... I'm pretty sure it not feedback.... it sounds like my home theater "hall" surround setting (if that helps) .....I un-installed msn messenger too... maybe I'll try re-installing it.....

Check (all) your sound settings again though. This sounds exactly like you or some program set the properties of the sound scope to "Hall", "Church" or whatever...

First check the sound settings in Windows default config panel:
Configuration panel > Sounds > Volume > Speakersettings > Advanced

Also, there could be a program which further sets up the flavor of the sound. Normally this program (which came with your drivers) is also to be found in the configuration screen, like the "Avance AC97 Audio Configuration Panel" (note, the name may be different of course).

I can't find anything like "Avance AC97 Audio Configuration Panel" on my computer....

also, yes I've restarted...

Thats probably because you don't have the same model as cookie said, therefore you won't find it. You'll have your own sound properties, look around in the control panel for it.

What motherboard/soundcard do you have? Sometimes in the volume propieties theres a 'volume' for 3D Stereo or something like that, very common when using SoundMax drivers. Check for that 3D stereo and deactivate it or just mute it. If you don't see it, go to options -> Propieties. Check the list and activate sime 3D option and change it's settings.

I'm talking about this volume window:

I have Legacy audio drivers. I also see SiS 7018 Wave....In my volume control, it has a 3D depth setting but when I change it there's no difference in the sound at all.... I just noticed now that my volume control isn't even in my system tray (i have it set for always show) I can get to it through control panel though....hmmm... what next.. I'd hate to have to re-install windows...

I recently had dodgy sound issuse like this.
If you paused the music for a while did it go back to normal?

If so it could be a problem with your Hardware Acceleration.
Try going to start >> run >> type "dxdiag" (with out quotes) >> in the dialog that appears find which sound tab refers to your sound hardware (most likly sound 1) and make sure the Hardware sound acceleration slider is set to full acceleration.

Yep, Its set to full....I tried pausing my music too but it didn't do anything, BUT, when my media player skipped to the next song, my messenger popped up saying what song is playing. That never happend before I had my sound problem. Did I download an update or something? I don't even remember.
