Google Earth! by albert on 06-29-2005 at 03:00 AM

Have any of you guys downloaded google earth yet? If not, you can do it by going on the official site : http://earth.google.com

now, my reviews of this prog, is that it is wonderful, really good mapping, can really be usefull when needed, but OMFG this thing is scary, I mean to see ur house like that in 3D, even to see ur pool in the map :| doesn't that scare u all? especially after seeing the Googlezon EPIC video :O ??

Anyways, i think its a great piece of software, and it's free, so i suggest u guys to download it

I hope you'll enjoy it ;-)

Which was bought by Google which was then transferred to maps.google.com which is now this.

This whole thing is nothing new at all, silly Google :P
RE: Google Earth! by Garndell on 06-29-2005 at 11:13 AM

Keyhole used to show my house clearly, Earth Viewer doesn't, you can see the area, just not the house anymore.

RE: Google Earth! by mad_onion on 06-29-2005 at 03:45 PM

and i tested it and the download diologue box appears

RE: Google Earth! by saralk on 06-29-2005 at 04:05 PM

I can see it?

Cookie, it is keyhole, but it has got a few extra features, like downloading business listings and searching them all from within the program.

If you look at some of the stuff they have in their labs, you can really see where they are taking google, it is going to become a very very useful hub of information.

I think that pretty soon, they will combine all their services into one system, that can be accessed from loads of different areas.

For example, if you are using their "Hello" messenger system, and you say to your friend "did you watch Desperate Housewives yesterday", Hello will reocognise that, and then turn Desperate Housewives which will provide information about the TV show from google TV, including when the program is going to be repeated etc...

RE: Google Earth! by marissa on 06-29-2005 at 04:20 PM

haha why cant you see any of canada or other countries besides the usa?

what a rip off :p atleast i didnt pay for it

edit: oh, i just got it to work...

RE: Google Earth! by [MR] on 06-30-2005 at 02:27 AM

why cant i see my house its just a whol;e bunch of blur like in the pic i attached yesterday...can anyone else get it to work for my house? i posted my address earlier so if someone can get a good pic of it using google earth post the pic and tell me thanks.

RE: Google Earth! by CookieRevised on 06-30-2005 at 02:57 AM

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=638+South+Rivershir...0.060013&t=k&hl=en

The pics are the same for everyone. They are satelite photo's and not every square inch in the world has been covered (or will be covered) in great detail.

If you want better resolution, your best shot is to turn to other sources (eg: local companies who take aereal shots from planes).

RE: Google Earth! by [MR] on 06-30-2005 at 03:01 AM

well i meant some ppl said they could see their house and i cant but o well it isnt a big deal

RE: Google Earth! by CookieRevised on 06-30-2005 at 03:33 AM

Yeah it highly depends on the location you search for. The USA is of course the most tracked and detailed so are important places and buildings.

Satelites, which take these pictures, don't fly everywhere over the world and taking hires pictures like that cost a whole lot of resources and money, thus if they fly over "not important" parts they are mainly used for goverment purposes and not for "leisure" projects like this...

What you can try instead for example are the aereal maps you can find on http://www12.mappy.com/ (europe) or other street mappers.

eg: For me (Belgium), in Google EarthViewer, the nearest big city isn't even properly visible, let alone my own town, street or house. But when I turn to a local company which takes photo's using planes, you can get something like this (it's part of my town).

Keyhole did provide free versions of the software and if you look you can see Google charges for the extra features just like Keyhole did.

On this page, scroll down to see the prices & features of the Plus & Pro versions: http://earth.google.com

RE: Google Earth! by linx05 on 07-01-2005 at 06:54 AM

I'm hooked on this thing! I've already found my house, my Aunty and Uncles' house and my old primary school. I've already added heaps of place marks of my own.

I think I might buy it when they let you.

They offered a free version which came with a Watermark (annoying as it was), I used the free version before getting bored of it, lol.

Correct. I also had the free version for a long long time (without a watermark even; maybe that got added later on(?)) and enjoyed it fully, before I got bored by it. The interface, looks, maps, etc were exactly as the ones Google is using now (appart from some small touchs ups of course)
RE: Google Earth! by rav0 on 07-01-2005 at 10:32 AM

If anyone has tried going to www.keyhole.com you can see that Keyhole doesn't exist anymore.

Google Earth isn't just a cobranded version of Keyhole. Google had owned Keyhole for a long time (2004, October), but now releases it under its own brand, instead of the Keyhole name.

The transition comes with a few changes, the most notable, no charge. However, the program is THE SAME THING, so I see no sense to comparisions between the two names for the same thing.

The old Keyhole program was also available at no charge! including exactly the same functions, restrictions, etc...

We are saying that Keyhole did come with a free version also. Nobody is comparing it per se... But you could compare it if you like, because when one company takes over another one, there are bound to be some changes.

This is exactly the same as comparing MS AntiSpyware Program and the old Giant Program.

I was going to use GIANT and Microsoft AntiSpyware as an example. My point was that Keyhole was under Google management for a while before adopting the new name.

Microsoft took GIANT AntiSpyware, and gave it the Microsoft face as soon it aquired Giant Company Software, with larger changes than when Keyhole 2 became Google Earth. Google aquired Keyhole, and started influencing its development, but kept the Keyhole name for it. Now, the much Google-developed program has finally been given the Google name, with only minor changes.
