Lag In Games by Caboose on 07-07-2005 at 11:57 PM

(I've searched around on Google & this forum but didn't find anything useful.)

I recently bought Lineage II and am very happy with it. The one problem I'm having is major lag. The ping on the server I play on is 208, while the ping on the same server at my friend's house is just over 100, and I have a faster connection then he does. Switching servers is not an option because the character data is stored for that one server only. Also, my download speeds are painfully slow.

Are there any Windows tweaks that can help me speed up my connection? Thanks in advance.

If your overall download speeds are "painfully slow"

I recomend you try both spyware scans and antivirus scans.

Online virus scan: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Spyware scanning tools:

www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

If that still doesn't change anything then contact your ISP maybe the problem is from there.

Also, a program called Tune Up Utilities 2004 has an internet connection tweak option (and lots of useful stuff) check it out here:

http://www.tune-up.com/

Tune up will only OPTIMISE your connection. If it is indeed abnormally and "painfully" slow, then you might have something killing off your bandwidth like a virus or malware (which is why i recommend the scans) or, and this is very possible, there might be a problem with your phone line or ISP... so i would check that after making the scans.

Lag doesnt rely on connection speed...Lag is also synonim of A lot of apps running, a lot of p2ps running and system specs (Graphics Card, processor, ram..)

Though if your friends specs are equivalent with yours, you should check your firewall/router, to see if you need to open any ports relative to the game

I just recently (a few days ago) did a virus/spyware scan and my computer is absolutely clean. I'll try TuneUp Utilities, though.

I play all my games on an account made & tweaked for gaming performance. There are very few apps running.

So its not JUST lag...

I tried TuneUp Utilities but it didn't work. Anyone have any other ideas?

Haha, I can't believe I didn't think of that. I disabled ZoneAlarm and all is well now. Thanks everyone :)

Google for which ports your game uses, and open them in your firewall...that way you'll be safe & fast

I turn on the Windows firewall (try not to laugh) so I think I'm alright. Besides, opening specific ports in ZoneAlarm is one of the most confusing things I've tried to do in recent memory :S
