Msn 7 does not start and systemtray icon is gone when rollover by Fredzz on 07-09-2005 at 01:51 PM

Ok a friend has been using msn 6.2 until today when she decided to install 7.. downlaoded 7 from the website and it doesnt run.. she clicks to run, and the icon shows up on the system tray but as soon she rolls over, the icon is gone without any error message. Now she cant go back to 6.2 because when she installs 6.2 it asks to upgrade. and when she clicks to upgrade it install 7.0, not the security update anymore

Any ideas please?

has she got it from the msn.com and not some other website?

Also you could try a clean install of MSN,

uninstall, reboot PC, redownload from msn.com and reinstall

let her:

1) Reboot PC

2) Uninstall MSN Messenger 7 completely and in the proper way (add/remove programs), if possible

3) Uninstall MSN Messenger 6 completely and in the proper way (add/remove programs), if possible

4) Delete, manually, the directories used by MSN Messenger (6 & 7):
- c:\Program Files\MSN Messenger (or wherever she installed it)
- %AppData%\Microsoft\MSN Messenger (this can, most likely, be a hidden directory so she need to turn on "show hidden/system files" in Windows)

5) Clear MSIE cache and cookies

6) Reboot PC again

7) Go to the Microsoft update site with MSIE and make sure she has ALL the updates and fixes (this includes SP2). After an update reboot the pc and then go back to the site and check again for new updates.

8) Download and install MSN Messenger from http://messenger.msn.com/
