Also get the latest drivers for video/audio cards, just after fresh install is a good time, because there are no old ones there. Compress hard disk if it's NTFS, and if it isn't, make it NTFS (I just remembered that I haven't done that, I will now). Set screen resolution higher, and enable ClearType.

Acrobat Reader is a must for any father, and perhaps Direct X could be useful as well.
I also use GoBack - if you haven't used it, I suggest you try it :)

Symantec’s Norton GoBack™ 4.0 allows you to easily undo PC problems. Restore your PC to a healthy state by going back minutes, hours, or even days (depending on available disk space). Also use Norton GoBack to restore files that have been deleted or modified, and to try new software safely.link

Codecs, like DivX, XviD always come in useful when you need to view stuff.
Also, for that matter, you could just install FFD Show, which renders videos and acts like a sort of universal codec for many MPEG-4 files, an ever more popular format for various video files and soon becoming a must have for every computer.
Even though its a PC that's mainly office based, its always a good idea to have your computer able to open a wide range of popular files...you never know what events may crop up when you want to view a file quick (e-mail from friends being the highest reason for this).

FFD Show

Winrar - might be useful
Realplayer - the amount of crap that uses it
WinDVD - perhaps?
Java - sun's java
Flash - if it isn't already installed
Alcohol

RE: Essential Programs For A Fresh Windows Install by Rubber Stamp on 07-26-2005 at 11:20 AM

dont think that all these are required...its an office use computer.

RE: Essential Programs For A Fresh Windows Install by Pyroteq on 07-27-2005 at 06:18 AM

Its mainly an office use, secondly a media pc.

So now what i need is somthing to do with dvds..
Alcohol 120% was a good suggetsion i completly forgot about that, man that comes in usefull sometimes.

So, whats the best dvd playing program? It came with PowerDVD but ofcourse that is only the trial and wont play things in surround.
