Portable Messenger by Patchés on 07-25-2005 at 10:39 AM

Hi everyone!

I have been a user of Portable Firefox for a while, and loved the way you could launch Firefox at any location, at anytime providing you had Computer and Internet access.

I downloaded the source code to see how it was written, and after a  few hours I understood the basis of the code. At the same time my friend asked me wether I had a Portable version of MSN Messenger, I told her about Messenger Live! She didn't like it.

We all know Messenger Live! sucked big time, it was a program that was create in what I can only guess to be under a minute using WinRAR. I then thought, that if Firefox can be made portable using code than it must be able to do the same to MSN Messenger.

I looked at the Source code of Portable Firefox, took bits out and added things in. It took me [roughly] 6 hours to get the code to work correctly, without it working to my high satisfactory level, I wouldn't even hand it out to people to test it for me.

I handed it out to Absorbation, who liked it and said it worked well, I did the same to MenthiX and to MoRiA. Who replied in the same way.

My friend loves it, I love it and my testers seem to love it. That is why I am releasing it.

Current Portable Messenger Version : 1.2.0

Current MSN Messenger Version : 7.0.0816

wouldnt msn still try to add its registry entires though? I thought the only way to make this fully portable was to "redirect" msn's api requests for the registry to some "file" located on the usb which acted like a portable registry

I don't see what is so different about this "portable MSNM". What have you changed about it?

RE: Portable Messenger by Patchés on 07-25-2005 at 12:47 PM

No changes at the moment, I am going to try and dip my hand in at the old add-on game. :)

And yes, it currently adds registry files, however, I am going to try and stop that from happening by as you said making a redirection file. I am just going to have to learn it as I go along. :)

So it's not portable?

It is actually portable, okay it adds registry files at the moment. But this a plimary (sp?) release. I don't know what the future may hold. :)

I'm sorry. But I still can't see what is different about this program (besides file sizes). You say it is portable but it saves the options to the registry.

Could you tell me what you have exactly changed to make it 'portable' please?
