Which Software Firewall? by Mnjul on 07-28-2005 at 02:39 AM

I want to change my software firewall. I have been using ZoneAlarm and is actually quite satisfied about it, but I just want to give other softwares a chance :P From what I've seen in various places, here are two candidates: Kerio (Limited-free or Full Edition) and Sygate. Which one is better?

I know some of you may say that a hardware firewall such as Router may serve better purpose but for some reason I can't have it now :)

Of course, if you think ZoneAlarm still surpasses Kerio or Sygate, or have other recommendation... tell me :p

Do they have to be free software or will you not mind paying a subscription fee?

RE: Which Software Firewall? by Mnjul on 07-28-2005 at 02:57 AM

I don't mind paying a subscript fee :) As long as it doesn't sound like 100USD a month :p

And by the way, I forgot to mention, it would be better if the firewall has built-in per-program brandwidth limitor; if not, it's OK too...

Sygate (y) (esp. Personal Firewall Pro)

Comparison between Basic (free) and Pro (payed)

Bah, I actually like McAfee personal Firewall plus, a nice GUI and easy to configure advanced features. You can have it as automated or as customised as you want and updates are out that are free, until a major build.

I like to do my research when buying things. And I came to the point where I found Look 'n' Stop was the best one. Outpost Firewall comes a close second.

If you want good protection, choose either of them. If you want a flashy looking program choose firewalls such as McAfee etc.

Think you should take a look at ZoneAlarm Security Suite (again?) they've recently developed a triple firewall (defense) system. I'd be using it if it didn't kill my system, might try installing it again sometime tonight.

I recommend you to stick with ZoneAlarm.
Other free firewalls work the same manner as ZA, minor differences, but they're lot like.
Sygate for example gave me a specific problem with my 2 PC's LAN (starting MSN Messenger's session on one caused the other one reboot, but well, who knows...)

My recommendation goes to Agnitum Outpost Pro. Check out a good review of it over at PCPro.

It isn't the full internet security suite, but it is one of the best firewalls you can get (uses least resources and has one of the highest levels of security). :P

Mnjul, what do you want it for? what are your needs?

If you have Windows XP, use its firewall and done.

If you have a couple of $ to spend, buy Mcafee. I have Mcafee Personal Firewal(2004 version), and it's quite good (Y) .

If I were you I would seek advice from professionals. As in, sites that specialise in firewall testing. That is what I did.

Look at tests and reviews. If you're going to buy a firewall make sure you researched it first (although you probably already do this - hopefully). Don't try something just because someone says "it's good".

That's my 2 cents.
