upgrading by [MR] on 08-02-2005 at 02:53 AM

im thinking about upgrading to windows 2000 pro or ME ... i need to know if i should still be able to use my video card on either one of those, im asking b/c after i upgraded my other computer to Xp the card was taking up to much power so i couldnt use it.  the computer has 233mhz and all the other specs are under requirements.  also which OS should i get 2000 or ME

RE: upgrading by ShawnZ on 08-02-2005 at 03:25 AM

Post all of your specs and we'll see which OS you can run best

RE: upgrading by [MR] on 08-02-2005 at 03:28 AM

win98, pentium II, 288 MB ram (it doesnt recognize all the ram thats actually in there)  Nvidia Geforce MX 4, has a HDD of 160 GB, is that all you need?

RE: upgrading by ShawnZ on 08-02-2005 at 03:31 AM

That will run XP for sure, but if you don't want to be risky than 2000.

You're pretty much open to choice with 200~mb ram and 160~gb and that video card. Pentium II might mean 2000 and XP will run a little on the slow end but you should be fine (Y)

RE: upgrading by [MR] on 08-02-2005 at 03:33 AM

o but the graphics card should still work right?  because on my other computer it has 933mhz and it had ME on it with the graphics card and xp wont run with the card in b/c it takes too much power

RE: upgrading by ShawnZ on 08-02-2005 at 03:34 AM

Windows 2000:

code:
133 MHz or higher Pentium-compatible CPU.

64 megabytes (MB) of RAM recommended minimum; more memory generally improves responsiveness [4 gigabytes (GB) RAM maximum.]

2 GB hard disk with a minimum of 650 MB of free space. (Additional free hard disk space is required if you are installing over a network.)

that'll run fine

xp specs:
code:
PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
•

128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
•

1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space

On the slow end but *should* run

It doesn't matter how much power the card takes... It should adjust automatically.

Besides, different operating systems dont need different power

ya well when i put the card into the computer with xp on it it just goes into ms-dos and has an underscore blinking

233mhz? XP will run. I can also do 1000 pushups - it just takes a loooong time.

Win ME is basically an upgrade of 98. It is supposed to be more stable but from what I've heard the gains are minimal.
Windows 2000 is an NT system, meaning it'll be more like XP. I don't know how either of these operating systems run though.
Why not have a stab at linux?
RE: upgrading by [MR] on 08-02-2005 at 04:20 AM

well i want to play games on this computer since the graphics card works on the computer

RE: upgrading by multimillion2k on 08-02-2005 at 04:24 AM

I would definitely suggest ME over 2000 for gaming. Just do some googling to see how to tweak ME as much as possible :)

RE: upgrading by [MR] on 08-02-2005 at 04:26 AM

well i used to have ME on my oter computer and i HATED it...every second the blue screen of death would come up

RE: upgrading by multimillion2k on 08-02-2005 at 04:30 AM

I know. If you're gonna use ME, then just go back to good ol' win98.
I reckon you should try 2000 just to see what happens. Don't try XP, I installed it on a 400mhz Celeron and it was about 5 times slower than win98.

RE: upgrading by Striker on 08-02-2005 at 04:45 AM

ME is the worse possible OS to run on any computer. It is known as microsofts worse project ever. i dont even think they support it anymore.
xp will run very very slow on that computer
stick with windows 98 second edition.

theres no real reason for you to have windows 2000 installed.. unless your buying a game that needs it.. but seeing as your processor PII, not many games will run on that.

but whatever you do, dont install ME

RE: upgrading by [MR] on 08-02-2005 at 02:55 PM

ya i know very well not to install ME b/c i used to have it.  it was the SUCKIEST OS ever!!!!

RE: upgrading by Garndell on 08-02-2005 at 05:17 PM

With the right tweaks XP can run on a P-100 without issues.  Granted XP will be slow on anything under 500MHz but it's bearable.  2000 Workstation would probably be a better choice performance wise while XP will give you better looks and a few extra features.

On the flipside of the coin, you should start to think of upgrading even to older equipment like a Athlon 800MHz+ or Pentium3 800MHz+ as that will get XP running smoothly and enable you to do more.

RE: upgrading by [MR] on 08-02-2005 at 05:19 PM

ya i do need to get another processor but i spent all my money on a new HDD so that will prolly be the next thing to buy,  what would a good and cheap processor be?

RE: upgrading by Garndell on 08-02-2005 at 07:02 PM

I'm guessing your CPU is a big Cartridge?  If it is then a Slot 1 Pentium 3 would be possible, without a Motherboard upgrade.  You can also get adapters to allow Socket 370 Processors in a Slot 1 Mothreboard.

http://www.kikumaru.com/pc/s370tos1/index_e.html (list of Adapter Cards at the bottom)

Good place to look for the Cards/CPU's is eBay or your local FreeAds (newspaper adverts of things for sale).

RE: upgrading by YottabyteWizard on 08-02-2005 at 07:37 PM

Go for ME definetly, XP will be very slow, you need something faster for gaming.

RE: upgrading by multimillion2k on 08-02-2005 at 10:43 PM

I pulled out my celeron 400mhz last night and installed nlite XP - it didn't do too badly - booted up in about 2 minutes. I'm gonna try win98 and see if there's any difference.

RE: upgrading by rav0 on 08-04-2005 at 10:53 AM

Whidows 2000 should work fine, but what games do you want to run on a 233 MHz?

RE: upgrading by [MR] on 08-04-2005 at 03:44 PM
