Can't you set it by going to desktop, right click -> Properties -> Settings and set it from there?

RE: screen size by Lou on 08-03-2005 at 02:46 AM

dpends on your screen, your drivers, and also your video card...

RE: screen size by guanako on 08-03-2005 at 02:47 AM

so i cant somehow tweak my video card or anything?:(

RE: screen size by Lou on 08-03-2005 at 02:54 AM

get the most recent drivers for it..and if that doesnt work get a new video card:P
lol

RE: screen size by [MR] on 08-03-2005 at 03:08 AM

ya if you get a good video card and/or get a big moniter there should be many more screen resolutions avaliable to your computer.

RE: screen size by YottabyteWizard on 08-03-2005 at 03:25 AM

You could tweak the size of the icons in your desktop to a smaller size.

code:
Registry Settings
User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics]
Value Name: Shell Icon Size
Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
Value Data: Size in Pixels (Default = 32)

Be very carefull if you're going to do this.
RE: screen size by guanako on 08-03-2005 at 03:32 AM

no, i will just buy a new video card, but i heard that some monitors cant display certain resolutions so idk if mine will be able to do it :s :'(
which ones do you recomend from this list? i am willing to pay more than $50 no more than $100 :p i know im cheap

RE: screen size by YottabyteWizard on 08-03-2005 at 03:37 AM

Yeah, i have a Geforce4 MX wich can go up to 2048 or something like that, but my ex-monitor only supported 1024x768, then i got a new one wich supports 1248x1024

RE: screen size by ShawnZ on 08-03-2005 at 03:43 AM

guanako, if your monitor is only 10 1/2 inches by 8 inches big, at 96 dpi you can only GET up to 1024x768.

RE: screen size by guanako on 08-03-2005 at 04:12 AM

well i have this http://www.monitorman.com/Compaq_15_LCD_5017m.html

RE: screen size by ShawnZ on 08-03-2005 at 04:14 AM

Yeah that even says right there it only goes up to 1024x768 :P

RE: screen size by guanako on 08-03-2005 at 04:42 AM

:( i need a beter monitor then who wants to trade :P

RE: screen size by qune on 08-03-2005 at 07:28 AM

no need for new monitor... your 'on-board' video controller (can't even say graphics card) won't be able to support bigger resolutions... every decent machine needs a descent craphics card... these 'on-board' video controllers are just for office computers or temporary solutions for home ones...

my own 17" CRT specification also says the max resolution supported is 1600x1200... eventhough it goes up to 2048x1536 with my radeon 9600pro...

The onboard video controller should support more resolution, even my good old Pentium3 mobo supported more than 1248x1024.
RE: screen size by guanako on 08-03-2005 at 05:32 PM

so a good video card will do the job u think?

RE: screen size by YottabyteWizard on 08-03-2005 at 08:49 PM

Hmm, check the available modes of your video controller doing this:

Control Panel -> Display -> Settings tab -> Advanced -> Monitor tab -> deactivate 'Hide modes that this monitor cannot display' -> Apply -> Now go to Adapter Tab -> List all modes.

By doing this you'll know if the problem it's your video card or your monitor.

No, monitors aren't made like CPUs - you're not going to get one that can miraculously support a higher resolution than specified, probably even more so with a TFT screen.
RE: screen size by guanako on 08-04-2005 at 02:10 AM

TFT monitor?
ok i did the display thing and this are some of the mods my monitor cant support so if i get another monito it will be able to display those?

RE: screen size by multimillion2k on 08-04-2005 at 02:20 AM

TFT - Tetra Fluoride Theatrics.
Incidentally, this is the same fluoride you get in your toothpaste.
Many people think it means Thin Film Transistor but unfortunately they never bother to check the real name.
Now that you know what it means, it's your job to go out there and educate everyone :)

RE: screen size by guanako on 08-04-2005 at 02:23 AM

yea but u didnt answer my 2nd question :( :S

RE: screen size by multimillion2k on 08-04-2005 at 02:27 AM

Where is that dialog box from? I don't know whether valid modes means your GPU can display those resolutions or if it merely means that those resolutions are standard resolutions.

But to answer your question - yes, if you get a monitor which supports a higher resolution then it will work. Most places will tell you the max resolution you can use anyway.

RE: screen size by guanako on 08-04-2005 at 02:29 AM

those are the ones that my monitor cant display i try them and i cant see my task bar or the image are way off the secreen but i think they are the ones that my display can give but my monitor cant take

RE: screen size by qune on 08-04-2005 at 05:15 AM

for one thing - don't use a resolution which is supported only at 60 Hz... it's a major eye-killer... refresh rates from 75 Hz (actually 74 Hz but AYK it's unsupported) and up aren't harmful to the human eye, yet I still recommend 85 Hz and up - at these rates the screen colors are much brighter and precise...

RE: screen size by guanako on 08-04-2005 at 05:18 AM

i have a LCD monitor dho

RE: screen size by rav0 on 08-04-2005 at 10:44 AM

If the native resolution of your monitor is 1024x768 you really really should use that.

Like you already said, a 60 Hz refresh rate will be fine, the only reason to change it would be for movies.

A new CRT monitor will be able to take massive resolutions, and a new TFT monitor may have a higher resolution, check the model you want.

With a 15" monitor, you shouldn't really to go past 1024x768 anyway.

RE: screen size by guanako on 08-04-2005 at 04:41 PM

i use to have a 17" one and i got many more resolutions btu the bad thng is that is no a flat screen :( i can get it back if i want and just trade my brohter wat would u do?

RE: screen size by rav0 on 08-05-2005 at 07:19 AM

I would keep the 15" TFT monitor. The 17" CRT isn't that much bigger. A monitor that size I would recomend 1024x768 anyway, and your TFT can handle that.

15" LCD = 38 cm
17" CRT = 39.9 cm

CRTs are smaller than the size they are called.

My Opinion:
15" TFT at 1024 by 768 pixels at 60 Hz refresh rate.
