Is there a way to install a printer without the disk? by Y2Pdogg on 08-06-2005 at 06:31 PM

I lost the install disk to my "Brother MFC 3100C" printer for my older computer and it crashed recently and I can't reinstall it. It's a great printer and I don't want it to go to waste.

Search google for the printers drivers, you can find pretty much any printer drivers off of the internet. Try the website of the creator of your printer first.

I downloaded this
http://solutions.brother.com/mfc3100c/download/dl-winxp-whql.html

hooked up the printer, it detected, followed the "how to download and install" document, and it said all the drivers were now installed but the printer wasn't showing up in the printers and faxes control panel so I chose to install it.

but my printer is not on the list as you can see from this screenshot

I tried using the other models of MFC printers but none of them worked.

It looks like you have XP. Have you tried letting Windows Update look for the drivers?

The way you are using the wizard is to install Microsoft drivers shipped with Windows.

Once you've downloaded the drivers from Brother run the file and choose to extract somewhere that you can easily remember and navigate to, eg desktop\brother. At the step in the wizard that you posted a screenshot of, click 'Have Disk ...' and then click 'Browse ...'. Navigate to where you extracted the drivers from Brother, and open any of the *.inf files that it shows you, it doesn't matter which you pick, it will have the same effect. Click OK, and it should show you your printer in the list, if not, uncheck 'Show only compatible hardware' and find your printer. Follow through the rest of the wizard, and your printer should be installed.

Add me to MSN Messenger and I can walk you through it.
