iPod, hosed & screwed by Concord Dawn on 08-17-2005 at 08:32 PM

My iPod doesn't work anymore. I formatted it in Linux (I know, bad idea) and now all it does is freeze. I can't get the iPod Software installer to install on my machine, can anyone give me some advice and/or the iPod Software installer directory in a zip? Thanks :)

Out of curiosity have you tried to remove the partition in Linux then reformat the partition as FAT32 under Windows?

Were you using iPodLinux?

No I wasn't using iPodLinux. I reformat the iPod as FAT32. The little folder with an exclamation mark appears, I plug it into the computer, computer recognizes it, and screen turns into "Do Not Disconnect". I try updating it (using another computer) and the software never installs correctly, and if I unplug the iPod, it just stays at "Ok to Disconnect". It appears to be in "Disk Mode", but I can't get it out.

To get the iPod out of Disk Mode hold down the Menu and the Select simultaneously with a bit of pressure. Once you see an Apple logo appear. Let go.

Brings it right back to the beginning of the loop, as if I'd reformatted it.

And on mine it's the Play and Menu buttons, mine is an older iPod

Yes. Same thing as if I'd formatted it in Linux.

Ok I would say put it back into Disk Mode and then run the iPod Updater and try and restore the iPod. You said it doesn't install the software correctly you mean after you restore it you still see the Folder with the Exclamation Point?
