Well, I have a digital camcorder wich saves the videos in ASF format and uses a lot of memory, so I would like to compress them to DivX. Any ideas?

Go for Xvid, it's open source, and better compression - you might want to thing about ogg compression for the audio, except it's not so common.
I think TMPGEnc handles asf files, and also Virtualdub (version 1.3c max), both of which are fantastic if you don't need to do sequence editing. There's a an alternate guide here if you're interested.
