wats next for google? by guanako on 08-22-2005 at 07:37 PM

Google executives say they plan to unveil on Wednesday a "communications tool" that is potentially a clear step beyond the company's search-related business focus.
While executives would not disclose what the new software tool might be, Google has long been expected to introduce an instant messaging service to compete with services offered by America Online, Yahoo and MSN from Microsoft.

may be there is a IM software coming soon with google's signature on it ^o)

more info

RE: wats next for google? by Kryptonate on 08-22-2005 at 07:41 PM

Could be IM software, since they allready have something similar ("Hello").

RE: wats next for google? by prashker on 08-22-2005 at 07:41 PM

RE: wats next for google? by guanako on 08-22-2005 at 07:43 PM

how can you tell if Google executives haven't given any more information about what's going to be unveiled? Perhaps it will be something like a smart-phone, who knows.
RE: wats next for google? by Fourjays on 08-22-2005 at 08:43 PM

If its an IM, then its come at the right time for me. Im starting to get fed-up of MSNs "features before functionality" approach to MSN7. If it wasn't for Plus, I would have dumped MSN ages ago.

RE: wats next for google? by Purity on 08-22-2005 at 08:56 PM

I totally agree.  If GIM or something comes out i'll be with that community....

RE: wats next for google? by ipab on 08-22-2005 at 09:02 PM

time for a new plugin :D. Where is raceprouk when i need him :P. I managed to get the installer for his phoenix ver 2 all working and then he is away -_-, i think that we should make a phoenix for the GIM before patchou decides to move into that domain (if it is even an IM that is).

RE: wats next for google? by L. Coyote on 08-22-2005 at 09:02 PM

Now, now, kids. It might be one of those dodgy mobile services they have on Beta (I think they're still in Beta, I dunno, everything is Beta with Google :P).

could be a development on a mobile tool, Google SMS ...
they have a really nifty feature where you can text them what you want and then they reply with the info... useful in quizzes ;)

If it's the Google we know they'll provide an SDK for developing plugins.

RE: wats next for google? by Anubis on 08-23-2005 at 07:34 AM

Oh noes, I really don't want to be divided between MSN and Google, everyone I know uses MSN as their main chatting client, its the done thing around here. No one around here uses any other client.

Even if Google's new IM client is really great I won't use it unless a large majority of people I know make the switch, which isn't likely seeing as everyone has used MSN for years and years...I don't want to be divided between two IM clients...

On a tech side, I think its safe to say that Google would only release something if it was more than competition with other IM clients, and they really have done a good job keeping it secret.

Anyway, they haven't even said if it is an IM client, for all we know it could just be a cup and string with even more bandwidth. However it does sounds very much like an IM client. The main problem I think they will fact is that they may not be able to convince enough users to make the switch, if everyone is totally settled on their current IM services with contacts.

Anyway, I can not wait to see if this is a new leet chat client.

RE: wats next for google? by Purity on 08-23-2005 at 07:38 AM

Actually, that is pretty much the case for me.....

RE: wats next for google? by Mentality on 08-23-2005 at 07:50 AM

it all depends on how many people signed upto the gmail accounts as to weather it will be worth it. at least thats part of it.

If I was working for Gmail thats what I'd be looking at. the popularity for Gmail would somewhat determine weather it would be worth making an IM. and if they do make an IM the would certainly mean that alot of people jumped to Gmail.

People like new things, the amount of people I know that use multiple IM clients, it's ridiculous. Anyway, not that they are but if they do, MSN has been ahead for to long, it's someone elses turn, I hope it works out, I'll certainly have ago.
obviously everyone would have to keep MSMessenger for a while till most people convert.
I just hope it has a nicer interface than there actual Gmail accounts if they do lol. i also reckon its gonna be web based and not an actual install.

Either way It's already BIG news

RE: wats next for google? by kao on 08-23-2005 at 08:05 AM

er, you know, there is a way of using more than one IM client at a time? just an idea for you =p

Oh that would be terrible, without an actual program being the client.
If its web-based it'll lack a ton of features, take longer to load and risks being browser made. No, if its web-based I won't use it, because simply put programs written in C++ are a ton better than those written in Java.

RE: wats next for google? by saralk on 08-23-2005 at 02:53 PM

I have already been using Hello messenger, which google bought for some time, and I really hope they develop that further, because Hello is awesome.

There are some really good features in it, its designed for sending pictures at the moment, but if they develop it further, keep the way the gui flows as it does now, and add new features, it will be a very worthwhile client

RE: wats next for google? by Kryptonate on 08-23-2005 at 05:17 PM

There are more rumours that talk about an IM client from Google. According to the Los Angeles Times Google wants to keep visitors longer with the ability of sending text messages and speech messages. The textmessages would go through Jabber, an opensourceproject that connects different IMclients. The subdomain talk.google.com is said to be activated but you only receive a 404-page now. The name of the new service would be "Google Talk"

yeah, but what's the point, i'd rather not run multiple ones because then it all get mixed up and slow down my crappy pc.
i hereby wish to force the entire msn-using population to google talk.

Kao was talking about programs like Trillian. Software that can be used to connect to different networks at the same time.

RE: wats next for google? by mwe99 on 08-24-2005 at 04:02 AM

Well first ups. its really nice looking

I like the beeps, they sound so clean unlike MSN its just a slight beep.

My advice : - TEST IT!

Oh and Shawnz i think they're working on stuff like that, I feel it came out a bit rushed.... coinciding nicely with the new MSN release...

if they want more people surely they should scrap invites for Gmail then

RE: wats next for google? by NiteMare on 08-24-2005 at 04:02 AM

i don't think you can change it, lol, i have nobody to talk to:P

You can invite your friends who aren't Gmail users to download Google Talk. They'll be sent an invitation to create a Gmail account at the same time. Just sign in to Google Talk, and click 'invite' next to your friend's name or click 'Add friend' at the bottom of your Friends list. Then follow the prompts to email an invitation to his or her email address.

I am not sure about that, just did a test and no email has gotten to my account, but it sounds interesting. Is it only if you have invites to give or even if you don't? Who knows! :p (rethorical question)
