messenger hacking by charliegirl on 08-24-2005 at 11:04 AM

[b]:@I just figured out that someone I know is hacking into my messenger and likely my email account too. How can I stop this? I have already tried changing the password. Through my log files I found that he had some sort of 10 digit number that I assume could have something to do with them gaining access. For all I know they may be getting into my pc as well but don't knokw how to go about checking fo that. Tonight I turned on the event log viewer to see what happened while I was sleeping and when I woke up I had been signed in and out several times. Could someone tell me how I can stop this?    charliegirl

Do you have an anti virus or a firewall? :)

RE: messenger hacking by linx05 on 08-24-2005 at 11:18 AM

Most likely someone has gotten your password and have been signing into your account.

Change your secret question/answer.

Secret Question/Answer:
Make up a question and make sure the answer has nothing to do with the question at all. For example:
Q. What is my favourite colour?
A. lightbulbs_are_cool_667

well hey!! umm signed in and out doesn't really mean that someone is signing u in and out, it happens with me always, it's just about the connection.

but i dont really get what do u mean by hacking, is he remote controling ur pc,! need more details

RE: messenger hacking by multimillion2k on 08-24-2005 at 11:46 AM

Hi, charliegirl - what makes you think someone is tampering with your account?

Regarding the event log viewer, I don't think that is any indication of anyone accessing your account.

Firstly, I would guess that when it says you have been logged out it means you have simply lost your connection to the server. I these cases Messenger automatically logs in again after about a minute. If there is less than 2 minutes between the time you were signed out and the time you were signed in again, I'm pretty sure that would be the explanation for this.

Secondly, If someone were to sign in using your account you wouldn't be signed back in, and the last entry in your Event Log Viewer would be 'You signed out'. The event log can only detect events coming from your computer.

The only exception that comes to mind is if someone were actually using your computer, as in someone in your house. Have you been mean to your brother lately..? :P

RE: messenger hacking by zaher1988 on 08-24-2005 at 11:56 AM

and is there any keylogger in ur pc :P and somepeople come and use ur pc ?

RE: messenger hacking by charliegirl on 08-24-2005 at 05:11 PM

Thanks for all the responses. Let see if I can answer them all clearly.
-Yes, Absorbation, I have avg anti virus and the sygate firewall.
-Linx05, I chnaged my password the other day and then when I went to sign in the next day it said I have signed in incorrectly too many times (which I hadn't) and I had to change the password again. This person would not know the answer to my secret question but I will take your advice and change it accordingly.
-zaher1988, Due to what was said in the conversation log I am worried that they are indeed hacking into my pc as well but not sure yet.
-multimillion2k, the event log viewer showed me being signed out (as I had left it on) at 3:53  and then signed back in at 4:10. There is noone else in my house and I'm never mean to my brother. He's bigger than me and he's a 50 year old  computer engineer. He's working on this right now from another city to see what he can come up with.
-zaher1988, there is no key logger in my pc that I know of-never heard of that.
Well, I think I covered everything. Hope someone can figure out how to foil these people. Also, is there any kind of log on a pc to record activities so that I can find out if they are accessing the pc itself? Thanks again. Charliegirl

RE: messenger hacking by net-cruizer on 08-24-2005 at 05:35 PM

Sounds like you are just losing connection once in awhile.
I doubt someone is using your account, but you probably could just change your password to make sure, and if you still get signed out an on like before, then I'd say you're just losing connection temporarily.
Also, if you recieve the pop up mentioned above, that could just mean some application caused Windows Messenger to run a process in the background, which would sign you out of MSN Messenger.

RE: messenger hacking by charliegirl on 08-24-2005 at 05:40 PM

Guanako, Yes, these people knew for a fact that I was out the night that they accessed it as I was at the place where one of them works/lives . I can't recall if that message was on my pc when I got home or not. I believe I was still signed in when I returned . Charliegirl

Further to this, I just received an email from Microsoft Passport stating that I had asked to reset my password by email - but I didn't. Hmmm. CG

Wow, I guess I was wrong, lol.
Well, if I were you, I'd definitely change password before someone else manages to change it on ya.
RE: messenger hacking by charliegirl on 08-24-2005 at 06:31 PM

Yes, net-cruizer, I have changed my password again and now I'm going to take linx05's advice and change my secret question. One more thing I forgot to mention is that one of these individuals email address was on my log on list of who can sign in and she has never been signed in at my house. CG

RE: messenger hacking by guanako on 08-24-2005 at 06:34 PM

post it and/or make a research of the adress

RE: messenger hacking by absorbation on 08-24-2005 at 06:35 PM

lol someone used the password reset (the hacker) do not ask for this becuase they will just have access again :S

RE: messenger hacking by charliegirl on 08-24-2005 at 07:05 PM

Guanako-I know who it is already. I just don't know what they are doing and have to figure out if they are accessing the pc itself somehow.
Absorbation-No, I won't be using that re-set.

RE: messenger hacking by DeathzLord on 08-24-2005 at 08:00 PM

If somebody is trying to hack you, using the MicroSoft Network, you could easily send an email to the MSN service, or call them and tell them that somebody is trying that!

If you read the rules of the MicroSoft Network, they say that hacking, sending virusses or spamming over the network is illegal and the go over into action!

If they are willing to help you, they will search for every IP-Adress that was connected of was trying to with you account! If they got that and you tell them your own ip adress, they got the Attacker, now they can send the Attackers-IP to the  PoliceStation.

The police will proudly go to that mf's house and take him to the station so they can have a nice word with this loonatic!

RE: messenger hacking by charliegirl on 08-25-2005 at 12:10 AM

Thanks DeathzLord, I 'll do that if I have to once I find out what they are doing. This was supposed to be a friend so I hesitate to do anything drastic yet but won't think twice if I find out they are up to something underhanded.:fight:

RE: messenger hacking by zaher1988 on 08-25-2005 at 07:19 AM

Charliegirl, dont miss also to change ur alternate email!! and save ur profile information to use them later in case ur email was gone!coz u can contact msn and give them these info, this is in case that was happend!.

Are u sure ur not the one who sent the reset password mail ? coz maybe u tried to change ur password and used this way !

and i again insiste that u have a connection trouble, u said ur msn logs out and in, and u also said u have troubles sigining in, and this trouble isn't because a password, it's a network error.coz later u accessed to ur account.

i suggest that you check again the leylogger thing, it's a hidden thing, if someone can use ur pc and he has installed that softweare, sure he knows where are its log files and he will know ur password!. coz i dont think a password can be stolen that easy like before, it only can happen with : 1- keylogger 2- fake signin (and sure just an idiot can do sign in using this fake) 3- an easy secret answer. coz if u dont know ur secret answer neither ur alternate email neither ur billing info(if u have them) then there is no way else but to contact msn support which will ask u for a list of info for their investigation. so it's not that easy to steal ur password from a far place!.

regards

RE: messenger hacking by stephen_wq on 08-25-2005 at 07:56 AM

When it says you are signed in on another computer, it will stay there until you click somewhere, or press a key, i know, i have had one for over 2 hours like that.

If someone gets your secret answer, then you are stuffed, because you cant sign in again, because the answer resets it, it doesnt tell them what it is, meaning if you can still get in, its not your secret question.

Keyloggers, got ad-aware, ms-antispyware(yes i know its evil), or spybot S&D?

RE: messenger hacking by charliegirl on 08-26-2005 at 01:41 AM

Stephen_wq-I have ad-aware & webroot spy sweeper and if they got my secret answer before, they can't get it now as I used the method that was suggested earlier by lynx05 (was that his name?). As for the key logger thing that you and zaher1988 mentioned I have no idea how to find it. I could ask my brother but he is so busy I wouldn't heat back from him for a week. Can either of you give me a clue where to look for this? The keylogger thing could very well be on my pc without me knowing it as I have a 2nd hand laptop that was used by someone before for business.
For all I know, I could very well have a connection problem which would explain the signing in and out but usually, in my experience, it will not sign in after it losing connection. It always makes me sign in again. But if that is the problem how would you explain the log file that was saved with this other persons name on it whom I have never had a conversation and the conversation itself where he told my friend to close out the -------(my msn name) conversation window and she replied "how?"?
Also, I am positive I didn't ask for a password re-set by mail as there has been some questionable things going on in my email as well so I purposely chose not to do that. By the way there has been no strange activity that I'm aware of today so far but I haven't had a chance to really look into it yet. Thanks for all your replies. Charliegirl;) oh yeah, and I will do that alternate email and profile stuff thanks a lot.

RE: messenger hacking by multimillion2k on 08-26-2005 at 02:28 AM

Sucks to be you, charliegirl! If I was you I'd be trying to get the guy back :P

Keyloggers can be hard to detect, they can disguise themselves as other applications and it's not always easy to tell.
The simplest way to check is by hitting ALT-CTRL-DEL (what version of windows are you using, by the way?) - you will see a list of all the currently running processes, like below:
This is XP - if you're using 98 is will be different.

If you see any weird programs you know shouldn't be running, check it out. If you want to find out what something is feel free to ask, or if you think it might be easier you can take a screenshot like mine and post it here.

If you haven't taken a screenshot before you do this by pressing ALT + Prt Scrn (next to Scroll Lock & Pause Break)
Open mspaint, and paste (Ctrl-V). Now save the file as gif, jpeg, or png.

To upload the file you can add it as an attachment (at the bottom of the reply page).

Do what Segosa says - he's pretty good. I'm sure he hacks people's systems with stuff like this :P[/joking!]

RE: messenger hacking by segosa on 08-26-2005 at 06:04 AM

Download HijackThis
Extract it into a seperate folder (do NOT just double-click the zip and run it from inside the zip manager)
Run it and click on "Do a system scan and save a logfile"
Copy and paste the logfile contents into a post on here, put them in between
tags.
