Tabbed Convos In New Plus by stuartbennett on 09-04-2005 at 07:56 AM

sorry if you have already answered this in the announcement thread but thats now closed so couldn't ask you in that. i am interested to know exactly how tabbed convos works exactly at a basic level. for example i host tournaments on the internet which i advertise on msn messenger now where-ever possible i try to bring all my contacts into one convo who are playing in the tourney but after you exceed about 6 msn don't like it and it starts kicking people out. so i often have to have 2 or 3 convos running with several contacts in each that makes it harder to keep track of. so i was wondering obviously when you open a new convo it is held ij an initial tab but when i go to someone else on my contact list can i right click and go open in new tab so it opens up a convo with them but in the new tab of the existing convo? also if so then what hapens when i have multiple convos open how does it know which convo to open the new tab in etc maybe it asks you to select which convo from a list or simething?

also lets say i have several tabs open in one convo now if you minimise convos when someone sends you a message they flash orange do the tabs dothe same and if not how do you know when someone rom one of the other tabs is talking? also how about a plus preferences option that could be for examle "open new tab on double click" i dont know what you would call it but basically instead of defaultly opening a new convo when double clicking a contact from contact list if this option was ticked it would defaultly add them as a new tab to the active convo. also what if you want to send a private message to a contact who your talking to from a group tab. can you right click them and select open in new tab rather than having to go back to contact list to do it.

these are just a few ideas i have thought of i will probably come up with more but it would be nice to know exactly how it is all supposed to work in the initial release and what will be added afterwards.

Features may deeply vary in the beta stage, because we are experimenting and discussing on usage, too. We can't give you many details for the moment, but we would be pleased to hear about your suggestions when the final version is released and you try it for yourself. :)

Unless expressly stated by Patchou, we are not allowed to accurately describe some new features behaviour, I hope you'll understand. :)

On the other thread some puntual behaviours were taken to discussion and some were revealed, while that mainly was what people had found in the leaked beta, it was slightly unprofessional for us testers to do so.

i understand what your saying keystorm and i appreciate you can't talk about it right now however it would be nice if nearer the actual release date when you have things finalised and patchou says it is ok. that you could atleast try to answer a few of these questions even if it has to be as cryptic as it will be in a future release anyway thanks for such a quick response.

I don't understand why you need this info before the next version is public available? You don't get to use it before that anyway, and then you will see for yourself excactly how it works. I'm confident that the beta testers have skills and knowledge about testing software, and also that they are very well used to tabbed browsing in web browsers (since they got the idea to implement it in Msg Plus! and actually did). The rest of us just need to sit back and wait for the new version to be finished. Until we once again can applaude Patchou and the testers for the great job they have made we can only cross our fingers and pray that they have the same ideas as we do, and make it just like we want to.

RE: Tabbed Convos In New Plus by KeyStorm on 09-04-2005 at 08:38 AM

Near the final release there won't be any change made to the feature, so it will be exacty the same to wait for the release anyway, because none of your comments or suggestions will probably be take into consideration for this very version. In that case, it is much better you try it yourself when the final version is released and we may hold a constructive discussion about its behavior that may affect the next release. :)

We too applaud Patchou for the great efforts he is putting on having tabs to work perfectly and its impact to be as smooth as possible on user's customs, whilst he adds extra-functionalities to them without bloating nor making the interface confusing.

Thanks for your support words, einum. They are really appreciated. :)

too true. i mean i can guess roughly what a present is by feeling it, for example if it's a DVD i can feel it's a DVD but still don't know what one so i still enjoy the mystery. well hopefully it won't be long before the official release then we can play with it to our hearts content.

Well, we're still developing the tabs with Patchou with much brainstorming and what not, so it will still need a while (I can't tell how much I estimate, because it would be subjective and unofficial and I don't want to spread false rumors) until it's completely ready to release.

I agree - I'm not sure how this info will benefit stuart. However, it would benefit me - I can get the Phoenix menu working properly with Plus! 3.60 then.

just a small question for patchou:

how does the tabs behave?.. (eg does it have hotkeys to switch them?)

Er... no, there are hotkeys, and they are intuitive. They will also be stated in the context menu, as usual.

If you look across many Windows programs, you'll notice certain conventions: Ctrl+S = Save, Ctrl+O = Open, Ctrl+F4 = Close Document/Tab. By sticking to convention, companies make their software easier to use.

Am I right in thinking Patchou sticks to these conventions?

We're doing our best to achieve this, indeed. :)
