MSN doesn't wanna connect by Hrrr on 09-05-2005 at 01:35 PM

since the first final version of MSN 7.0, i've been facing a very problem to connect to MSN... it doesn't want to connect maybe because of timeout, when it should connect normally (Webmessenger connects with no problem).

wtf may be that?

Have you allowed Messenger in your firewall settings?

How does it timeout, is the port 113 blocked? Do you get an exact error (0x)?

The cause could be the port 113 (SSL) forwarded to another computer, and SSL port is used by MSN to authunticate you to the network.

MSN connects successfully sometimes, but most times doesn't wanna connect
i don't remember the error number yet =(

The server maybe down in your area etc and there is nothing you can accept wait.

Unless you use xerver which connects to a new server after 3 unsuccful attempts :)

Download X Server here

Quoted by a messenger help website:

quote:
This error usually appears when there are problems on the MSN Messenger servers. Check the .NET Messenger Service status to see if this is the case. If there are problems, wait until they are over and do not try to fix anything on your computer.

It can also be that MSN Messenger tries to connect through a proxy server and this server is not responding. You can try making MSN Messenger connect directly to the Internet: click Tools in the MSN Messenger menu, then choose Options.... In the MSN Messenger options screen select connection in the list to the left. Then click the Advanced Settings... button. In the screen that appears try unchecking all the checkboxes except TCP. Restart MSN Messenger and see if it connects now. If it still does not connect set the checkboxes back and contact the network administrator and ask him take a look at the proxy server.

Does that help? :)

Port 113 is NOT used by SSL - SSL is Secure Sockets Layer, and is an encryption, not a service.

Port 113 is used for the now defunct IDENT protocol, and can safely be forwarded into the ether. I know this for a fact, as I have done it myself (forwarded to 192.168.1.254, which doesn't exist on that network). And I could still sign into Messenger with no problems.

It isn't defunct. It's still used with IRC, and sometimes FTP.
RE: MSN doesn't wanna connect by RaceProUK on 09-05-2005 at 08:27 PM

Forwarding it to the ether never stopped me on IRC or FTP.
If I understand how IDENT works correctly, it's the method used by old Unix servers to check the identity of a machine. However, now there's SSL, there's no need to check identity, so IDENT has waned in use. Only old, non-SSL servers will use IDENT.

Ahem. SSL has nothing to do with Ident, nor does it replace it. It's not defunct or old either, its commonly used.

RE: MSN doesn't wanna connect by RaceProUK on 09-05-2005 at 08:32 PM

I know it has nothing to do with IDENT, but a secure connection is harder to crack.

EDIT: https://www.grc.com/port_113.htm
I've just reread that, and it explains that IDENT was used to automatically identify users of FTP and such. The problem was the almost complete lack of security, so no-one trusted it. Even now, servers that do use IDENT don't really care whether the connection is accepted or rejected, and stealthing it has never caused me any problems.

Suffice to say, IDENT isn't causing any problems with MSN Messenger.

Read:
http://kline.dal.net/exploits/ident.htm
The majority of servers actually have identd forwarded.

RE: MSN doesn't wanna connect by RaceProUK on 09-05-2005 at 08:39 PM

Still, I stand by my claim that most servers don't force IDENT on you, whether it's in use or not. And we kinda got away from the original point of my first post in this thread, which was IDENT won't be stopping anyone getting onto MSN Messenger - AFAIK, the MSN servers don't use IDENT.

RE: MSN doesn't wanna connect by Hrrr on 09-06-2005 at 07:26 PM

the number displayed in the error message is 81000306

there was no checkbox and the only thing written, in one of the the white boxes, was "1080"
RE: MSN doesn't wanna connect by RaceProUK on 09-09-2005 at 10:04 AM

There are four checkboxes on that dialog. Please check again.
