Hey guys, i'm considering using linux on one of my computers, and im just wondering a few things... what distributions do people think are the best? and what programs would you guys recommend i use? internet browsersm office alternative, antivirus/spyware/adware etc, firewalls etc etc. i really have no idea with linux, but i'm always wanting to find out some new things and im really looking for a change! also how easy is it to take linux off a computer and put windows back on it? probably just a matter of formatting the hard drive? RE: Linux by Hank on 09-07-2005 at 08:26 AM dual-booting is best using 2 Seperate HDD's. 1 for Windows an other for linux, . Suse10 is becomming a Good Distro now that t uses YUM, , Suse is also Piss easy to setup dualboot or not an can resize partitions etc, i dont know if ubuntu has a utility in its distro that allows a user to resize aa partition. but for Virus Programs for linux there are some around but dont really need them as its not really a target for a Lot of Viruses unlike Windows, so no you wont need a Virus scanner. an for ofice stuff, use Openoffice or Koffice, RE: Linux by RaceProUK on 09-07-2005 at 09:38 AM
quote:OpenOffice.org is the better of the two, as it's compatible with most MS Office formats. In fact, OpenOIffice.org is so good, I use it on Windows RE: Linux by Hank on 09-07-2005 at 09:43 AM
quote: true, i use it in Windows to, an FC4, but some prefer koffice i dont myself RE: Linux by lordy on 09-07-2005 at 09:49 AM thanx for this guys, keep the ideas coming... what do you think of the Ubuntu distro? i also have the fedora distro on a cd somewhere... what do you guys reckon? RE: Linux by Hank on 09-07-2005 at 09:52 AM it depends what your comfortable with using. i myself prefer fedora/redhat, but use Both distro's an see what u prefer RE: Linux by kao on 09-07-2005 at 10:20 AM If you want to check which you prefere before switching, get VMware and try them all out on your pc through that, then you can see which you prefere then install it properly if you must RE: Linux by Hank on 09-07-2005 at 10:49 AM i dont think VMWare works to well on FC4, though i might be wrong, i just seen posts in the fedoreforum about it RE: Linux by Concord Dawn on 09-07-2005 at 11:11 AM I prefer Ubuntu personally. It's a Debian based distro, and it uses apt. And yes, Ubuntu has the ability to resize partitions during install. RE: Linux by lordy on 09-07-2005 at 11:37 AM is there a linux base messenger alternative at all? its not really ne trouble if there's not seeing as though i'll still have a Windows based PC as well, but it'd b easier to use it all on da one computer obviously lol RE: Linux by Hank on 09-07-2005 at 11:42 AM
quote: about APT, its becomming a Depreciated package, YUM is the next best package Manager.. quote:that i didnt know, as i dont or never used ubuntu RE: Linux by YottabyteWizard on 09-07-2005 at 11:57 PM Used Mandriva 10.1 before and kinda problematic, I had to disconnect my USB Printer so the OS can boot. And I'm testing FC4 and i was going to put to download Ubuntu the past night. FC4 is very good as I can say and easy, but must download aditional RPMs so it can read NTFS partitions and also MP3s . RE: Linux by ShawnZ on 09-07-2005 at 11:59 PM Ubuntu. Hands down. RE: Linux by YottabyteWizard on 09-08-2005 at 12:01 AM

quote:so? his pc is windows atm, isn't it? he's considering linux, so why does it matter how VMware works on FC4? he can put it on a windows machine to try them all out first ¬_¬ and yes, ubuntu ftw. RE: Linux by lordy on 09-08-2005 at 11:41 AM im thinknig ima use ubuntu from these comments lol, and i ahve it on cd somewhere too so it's all set! thanks for all the help guys... but no1 did answer my question about the linux msn messenger alternative? i take it that there isnt one then?
