Graphics Card Comparisons by user27089 on 09-07-2005 at 04:02 PM

I have just spoken to somebody, and he has offered to sell me his old graphics card for £35... The graphics card that he wants to sell me is the nVidia GeForce FX5700LE (256Mb).

I spoke to squall, and yet again, he has put down something that I own, so I thought I should ask on here, he said that my current graphics card is better than it... (ATi Radeon 9000 [64Mb]), I don't know what to say...

Which is better, keep in mind that I'm getting the 5700Le for £35!

RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by Rubber Stamp on 09-07-2005 at 04:47 PM

there must be some flaw or click, otherwise no one would sell such a card for a lil amount as that.
have u asked wat makes him sell the card?

RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by RaceProUK on 09-07-2005 at 05:23 PM

squall said a Radeon 900 is better than a GeForce FX5700? WTF?

Go for the GeForce mate - it's much better than your current Radeon.

No, the guy I know is very trustworthy and a good friend, which is why he is selling it to me for this price. It is 100& working condition, the main reason for selling is that his new nVidia 6800GT should be there soon .

But why is it, Squall comes out with all of this pixel shading 2.0 crap, I mean, speak to me like you'd speak to a normal person, not like you'd speak to the guy who actually designs the graphics cards .
RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by RaceProUK on 09-07-2005 at 07:30 PM

The Radeon 9000 was rival to the GeForce 4 series. A GeForce FX5700LE is newer than a GeForce 4. 'Nuff said really.
</useful part>
As for all this pixel shading 2.0 crap, that's only really of benefit to techheads and uber-geeks. Or advertisers, who don't understand it, but think 'Wow, Pixel Shader 2.0! Must be better than 1.0.', which it is to be fair. But anyway, most people don't care much about the details. All they want is something that does the job, and does it well.

And a GeForce FX5700LE does the job better than a Radeon 9000.

Edit: Tip for the future - don't bother asking squall about graphics cards. He goes on at length about crap no-one cares for, gets info from questionable places, and can't accept when he's wrong. If you remember the whole NTFS v FAT32 issue ages ago, it didn't matter to him how many CompScis or server admins told him he was wrong, he wouldn't admit it. And it was all about a fault that doesn't exist.

RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by user27089 on 09-07-2005 at 07:47 PM

Okay then, I think I've made my mind up that I'm going to buy it, I mean, it's a bargain! £35, that includes P&P aswell, and it comes in the original box, I can either wait 2 weeks to pay for it, or sell something random on ebay...

I have sort of got to the point where I am no longer listening to Squall anymore, I've had too much of him always thinking he's right and going on about all of this tech balls, and for some reason, anything that I have, he has something better than it...

nvidia>ati.

RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by brian on 09-08-2005 at 12:27 AM

I have a 9600PRO (Asus/AGP8X, fits on 4X.) on my computer, not being mucho used, could sell it for a resonable price.

RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by lizard.boy on 09-08-2005 at 12:49 AM

i'm using a5700le 256mb and its a decent card, i've had it running dual monitors on 1280*960 since febuary. i can run most games on decent settings.

RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by YottabyteWizard on 09-08-2005 at 12:56 AM

GeForce 4 MX 440 AGP8x here :'( I know it sux(N)

RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by Garndell on 09-08-2005 at 07:46 AM

Out of those 2, FX 5700LE.  However, you should realise you can buy a Brand New 9200, 9250 for under £30 or a GeForce 6200 for £45.  I'd recommend a 9200 or 9250 over the FX5700LE if you want true DirextX 9 compatability, something the FX series has trouble with.

For £35 it's a good card, just be aware of what you can buy new for the money aswell.

RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by kao on 09-08-2005 at 08:05 AM

the FX5700 is better, but the FX series does suck, i used to have an FX5600 256mb and it was pretty lame, but still better than your current card traxy. And for £35, there's no reason not to upgrade, you will almost surely see a performance increase.

RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by user27089 on 09-08-2005 at 05:04 PM

Brian, is that card better than the card that I'm going to buy, or my current card, because I prefer ATi cards...

How much for it btw?

RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by RaceProUK on 09-08-2005 at 05:49 PM

I think the 9600 is a bit better, but don't quote me on it.

RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by Negro_Joe on 09-08-2005 at 06:12 PM

Deffo ;)
NVidia only make two families better: 6600 and 7800.

9600 Pro & 9600XT are better, the 9600 (plain) tends to drop off a lot in OpenGL games compared to a 5700.  However, a 9600 (plain) is better than a 5700LE which is just a crippled 5700 (plain).  I used a Sapphire Atlantis 9600 256MB and a 5700 (plain) 128MB and the 5700 was the much better card.

From a 9000 the next logical upgrade would be either 9600, 5700, X300 or 6200.  Take your pick really, they'll all outperform the 9000.

And one reason is because the 6800 series lacks the Hardware WMV Decoding on the PureVideo chip while the 6600 & 7800 has it.  The other is, the 6800's always had solid competitinio in the X800 & X850 series, while the 6600T has next to no competition and the 7800 is unrivaled for now.
RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by brian on 09-09-2005 at 12:22 AM

The price, I don't really know, I got it for around 120$ USD, give me your best offer, and I'm shipping it + insurance

i have the 9600 in my old System an does a Great Job. i think the 9600's an up were the better cards

RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by user27089 on 09-09-2005 at 06:41 AM

So then, the 9600 Pro is better than the 5700Le?

You didn't really tell me very well :p...

$120USD = £50

so around £30-£40.

RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by YottabyteWizard on 09-09-2005 at 06:44 AM

There are lot of opinions and different brand fans....

As i posted before I would go for NVidia not for experience, but more for what I've heard about ATI (driver problems... and stuff) and i like more the logo and name of Nvidia (:$) anything else than this i don't have anything agains ATI, but the NVidia card I've seen and tested have been pretty nice.

But technically... talking about performance I don't really know :'(. Rightnow I'm saving money for a new mobo with PCIe and waiting also for the prices of the GF7 to drop, it's the card of my dreams(Y)
RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by Garndell on 09-09-2005 at 06:57 AM

Yes the 9600 Pro is a better card than the 5700LE.

To be fair to ATI i'm running my old Radeon 9600 256MB now and it will happily run the following at 1024x768 Medium Quality with no AA/AF (Anti-Aliasing / Anisotropic Filtering) Half Life 2, Doom3, Battlefield 2, WoW, Lineage 2, Unreal 2 & Everquest 2.

I use 5.6 Drivers as they perform best on a 9600.  Expect new cards from nVidia & ATI to be around in Q1 of 2006 (hopefully).

RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by user27089 on 09-09-2005 at 07:15 AM

The thing is though, that my currenct card can run Half Life 2, Doom 3 & Farcry at medium quality and it's all good...

RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by brian on 09-09-2005 at 07:01 PM

Hmm.. fourty pounds, that about how come USD?

And to point out, I mostly play Counter-Strike: Source, at DirectX level 9, everything on full, and 2X AA/4X AF // 1024X728 and it runs perfectly, with a 1.8A P4 OC'd to 2.52, awesome card.

selling it for the cause of me wants to buy new computer, and I would need some money, plus I won't be buying a PCI-E mobo. thats about it, talk on msn fo' more. =P

RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by RaceProUK on 09-09-2005 at 07:40 PM

XE Universal Currency Converter - uses the latest rates I think.

RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by user27089 on 09-09-2005 at 07:53 PM

Well, I can buy the graphics card for £50 over here, so it would be around £35 tbh...

Is that okay? It's all I have atm...... >.<

($64USD btw.)

RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by stoshrocket on 09-09-2005 at 08:26 PM

You need critics. Take a look at all the free ringtone sites. A critic would tell you that they charge you $10 per week for a subscription service after that.[/slightly off topic]
RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by lordy on 09-10-2005 at 11:57 AM

just a question... is a radeon x300SE a very good card? im considering gettin one... but i'm not too sure... atm i have a GeForce FX5200   much better?

I would agree with that comment about ATI cards.

I've used a GeForce 4 MX440, an ATI 9600 (or 800, idr), and my current FX5900XT.

The GeForce 4 performed about as well as you would expect... I tried the ATI on recommendation, but after having crash after crash while playing games, and trying what must have been at least 20 different types of drivers, it still wouldn't work right for me. Kept giving me errors about GPU lock-ups and other shit... It was returned to the shop, assumed faulty and/or just a POS.

My FX5900 hasn't let me down yet. :) Bit of a problem with the previous set of drivers, but so far so good on the newest ones. :) It is designed for DX9 too, so no probs there.

I would always go with nVidia graphic cards. :D
RE: Graphics Card Comparisons by brian on 09-10-2005 at 03:46 PM

I don't think I could go with 64$ USD, that's just.. half the price, and the card is still new.

And that shows the difference between squall and a critic - the critic is informed.
