Stickies for beta/released plugins Suggestion for Mods by TazDevil on 09-08-2005 at 09:39 AM

I have a suggestion for the forum administrator of Plugins subforum

ok the forum is being used for noting releases of new plugins, beta plugins, and requests for plugins....

Many requests imho wouldn't be made if pple searched a bit, but what to search? when there is a no good description of the beta plugin...

So i'd suggest that the admin would make all plugins (beta, released) into a sticky so that they are always on top, therefor people would always see it and also help the developers, by having more people test their plugins for bugs etc etc...

Some plugins i have in mind are (i dont use many plugins my self)
-Window Manager
-Screenshot Sender 3 Beta
-Who Sent It
... etc
that are still in beta phase...

Or you could always make a subforum in order to separate requests, beta, released plugins (not a good idea imho, more admin work to separete posts etc..)

Thanks for considering

I think the current situation is good enough, since people using Betas should know to search in the first place. The last thing we all need is some inexperienced user downloading a Beta, then demanding tech support due to problems.

Betas are for people who know what they're doing, so they can discover bugs and report them. Most users aren't sufficiently skilled to beta-test properly.

Note: This post isn't intended to put anyone down, more to shed light on the general situation. I'm all for public availability of Betas, but people need to be aware of the risks of unfinished software.

For some reason I still dont think this would stop people from joining so they can post their question once and leave.... even if it has been asked 100 tiems already.

This should also be in the "Forum and Website" forum

It isn't about the forum/website though.

If the author is going to release a beta to the public, he/she will post about it in here. So it shouldn't be too hard to find out about it.

It's about the forum and website.... He's asking for plug-in threads and beta threads to be made stickies ;)... those are two different forums (MSN or Msg Plus! General Talk & Plugins forums.)

I think there'd be waaay too many stickies... especially with all the plug-ins there are.

Well i agree that betas shouldnt be used by noobs, but developers like me, need more and more people to test the plugin to make sure that it is bug freee before releasing

and that it could be easily noted in the download post that it is still in beta and bla bla bla...

Anyway i was not talking about every single plugin, i mean the mods know, for which plugin there is most demand, and questions...

Ok about searching, WE all know that there IS a search function, but experience shows that nevertheless, noobs never never search.

Anyway it's just an idea mods need to consider...
(i mean what bad to have 10 plugin stickies)

If you want testers badly enough, make a thread to call for testers. If that doesn't get enough, then you could PM a few poeple who'll be likely to help out.

I think it's best the way it is. If you have too many stickies, there's less room for other threads. If there's less room for other threads, some that don't get answered straight away could get quickly lost onto page 2, and who goes to page 2? Granted some do, but not everyone.

Out of interest, how many forum members are on your MSN contact list? You could ask them as well ;)

i think a better idea would be to keep to the current way of having a thread per plugin (for releases) and have just one sticky listing them with links to the threads

That's actually a very good idea, as long as there's a note in the first post aimed at scaring off n00bs.

I'd like to see a subforum beta's as well :)

Though before adding stickies, people should learn how to make only 1 thread about their plugin and keep things organized. As it is now, there are too much scattered threads all about the same plugin. Stickies wouldn't solve a thing and only make the function of stickies useless because there will be too many.

I'm afraid that it has no functionality. For some particular plugins this could be usefull. But for most (if not all) it isn't. If you want to post a beta, why not post it in the dedicated thread (and/or toppost) in the first place? Why making another thread? Beta's of plugins become quickly updated and what one person calls a plugin beta isn't for the other plugin creator. It will simply causes even more confusion.
Reading many thread about plugins you can see this perfectly. A beta is published, some bugs are reported, then a "final" version is published (often in a seperate thread; go figure why). Then some more bugs are reported (between the trivial chitchatting) and another version is published, etc... seperating all this over different threads is nothing more then adding to the confusion and people wouldn't know anymore what the latest release is or what an update is or an old version, etc...

-------------------

And on the subject of searching: unfortunatly stickies wont help much with that either; you still need to search for something. Stickies wont fix the lazyness of people so to speak.

Just think of all the questions we've had to answer about the sponsor, despite this sticky.

I agree with you, my idea is to create one sticky thread only with all plugins list in it, editing when updated are available :)

That's the purpose of the official plugin database...

Instead of creating and updating that thread, update the database. The person who would need to update the thread could as well send a simple mail to Fraisie to update the official database...

There is no need for such threads and it is double/useless work.
