We were just discussing whether or not banning internet access for criminals involved in internet-based crimes made any sense (or was really viable), and along comes another story about just such a ban. It turns out that the kid who famously hacked Paris Hilton's T-Mobile Sidekick and revealed all of her contact info has now been barred from posessing or using anything that can access the internet for two years. Anything? That sounds a bit extreme. While the guy apparently was involved in a long string of hack attacks against a variety of different targets, with so much being internet enabled these days, it seems a bit silly to completely ban him from any device that can access the internet. It rules out an awful lot of mobile phones. Modern gaming consoles are pretty much out. Many DVR devices can access the internet. Increasingly, cars have some form of internet access as well. What about VoIP phones? They access the internet. What if the guy doesn't even realize he's using a VoIP phone? This isn't to say the guy doesn't deserve some punishment. But, the ban doesn't seem to take into account the realities of the world.

I'm sorry, but if someone commits cybercrime via the Internet, it's perfectly acceptable to ban thaty person from the Net. Given so much uses the Net these days, it won't take a long ban to show people how much they depend on the Net. Hell, I'm fully legal online, and I get a bit ratty over a couple of days with no connection.

"Hey, hold my phone for a sec?"

"SIKE!!"

I mean everyone is entitiled to their own privacy and of course he should be banned.

I certainly disagree with the decision.

On a different note, would anybody even care if he hacked my phone, not Paris'?

RE: Paris Hilton Hacker Banned From The Internet by Anubis on 09-15-2005 at 03:20 PM

Firstly, this guy isn't what you'd call a "hacker" a true hacker is someone that explorers the internet to find problems and then solves them, in the hopes of making the internet better. This guy is more of an offencive cracker than a hacker, there is a difference that must be noted.
However I don't have a problem with this sort of banning, if people take the piss on the internet and misuse it with the purpose of doing wrong things, why shouldn't they be banned?

Indeed, that whole "hacker" propaganda is annoying. :-/

Now, my question would be: only two years?! :-/ He shouldn't be able to access the Internet for more than that. And I don't care if the toilet has access to Internet, people should think before risking the integrity (and even lives) of others.

Everyone's privacy is important, and if someone leaks your cell phone's content to the Internet, you have the right to call the authorities and let them do their job.
RE: Paris Hilton Hacker Banned From The Internet by segosa on 09-15-2005 at 06:23 PM

afaik all the guy did was try login with her account, click 'I forgot my password' and answer the secret question (which was the name of her dog). It was all commonly known info, anyone could have done it.

It's kind of stupid banning him from the Internet for 2 years for something that simple. Maybe if Paris Hilton didn't keep photos on the phone of her kissing her naked lesbian friends eh...

It's her own fault for doing something as stupid as answering a secret question truthfully.

Agreed, who answers their secret question truthfully? :refuck:
RE: Paris Hilton Hacker Banned From The Internet by RaceProUK on 09-15-2005 at 08:17 PM

OK, so Paris Hilton was stupid, but what the guy did was unauthorised access of someone else's account. That is a crime.

<offtopic>
Anubis, 'hacker' can also be applied to anyone trying to find weaknesses in anything in order to propose fixes, or someone that writes code that runs in someone else's process.
Therefore, several plugin authors are hackers (including me), as is Patchou. We all write programs that run in Messenger's process space, so we need to 'hack' into Messenger to find out where to inject code, what to subclass, what hooks are needed etc.

The problem with using the word 'hacker' comes from the media twisting it's meaning to cover such practices if they are employed maliciously. Myself, I'd be all to happy to say I'm a hacker to fellow coders, but in the everyday world I steer clear of that word.

's been done before. nothing new. some kiddie took down cnn and a couple other sites with `TFN` i think it was called. he got banned from using the internet for a couple years aswell

RE: Paris Hilton Hacker Banned From The Internet by mwe99 on 09-15-2005 at 09:16 PM

Banned from the net... oh cmon, hes just gonna set up a new ID (a new name and stuff) and get on it via that. I'm all for the the prevention of cyber crime but there isnt much you can do to stop it at the moment, the only way you can stop him from using the net is to watch him 24/7 and thats obviously not an option.

don't you think he'd be watched or under house arrest? he cant just go to a friends computer or the point would be ruined.

The guy shouldnt be given 2 years. Thats bs.

RE: Paris Hilton Hacker Banned From The Internet by *Saint* on 09-16-2005 at 12:25 AM

banned is stupid. to ban someone there has to be a person in charge of it ,an owner no one owns the internet

so the tax payers pay for that then? I highly doubt they would do that as its pretty pointless, this is just probably just a show for the media...

True, however there are quite a few cyber police out there, i.e computer forensics etc, so any crimes to do with computing, the experts are called in to find the evidence, child pornography etc

RE: Paris Hilton Hacker Banned From The Internet by Purity on 09-16-2005 at 04:18 AM

I think it's a bit too much, at most 6 months..... :-/ but even still, wtf, banned from the net.  That's like taking crystal meth away from a crystal meth addict. :-/

Of course nobody would care if someone hacked your phone!
you are a nobody! Nobody likes you! There would be nothing to take from your phone anyway! You just type random numbers in your phone and save them as you "friends" number! You type up your own messages and then save them and go around showing off that your supposed girlfriend sent them to you!
And for what reason are you going on about him?

[/offtopic]

I believe that this ban has ups and downs. I mean, stopping the guy from going on the internet will make him want even more hwen he can finally get back on, so his acts will be much worse.
RE: Paris Hilton Hacker Banned From The Internet by segosa on 09-22-2005 at 02:33 PM

My post above seems to be false.

I read something showing the steps the guy took to hack her phone and it wasn't as simple as I thought.

RE: Paris Hilton Hacker Banned From The Internet by user27089 on 09-22-2005 at 04:42 PM

I think that it is a load of rubbish that he was banned from the internet, like said in the article, almost every piece of electric equipment can access the internet now-a-days, I'm half expecting an iron with WiFi access to come out soon, so that woman can surf the net while doing the chore they love the most! (In a non-sexist way btw, simply a joke)...

Hacking is really stupid though, people hacking servers and things is just lame, I don't see the point unless it is for a good cause, which a lot of the time, it isn't. They just do it to prove a point and show off to their friends...

What did he gain from hacking her phone anyway? Stuff everybody has seen before!

RE: Paris Hilton Hacker Banned From The Internet by Negro_Joe on 09-22-2005 at 05:28 PM

I dunno its still not very nice.. i mean it kind of makes you think someone could be looking at ppictures of your right now,

Most dont hack to show of to their friends they hack to see if they can hack something. Or if they are dodgy they hack to steal information or deface a site.
