virus found? by botsie on 09-15-2005 at 04:30 PM

I had a link to Messenger Plus from my website, using one of the banners provided. Over the past two days, i've had several reports from people that the virus 'swissor' was found as they installed it.  (N)8o| Needless to say, they stopped the installation, and contacted me. i've had no choice but to remove the link until I know for certain whats going on. Has this happened before? :^)

MsgPlus! doesn't have any virus in it. :)

I suggest you read this thread. (Y)

More Information:

swizzor is basically the sponsor program attached with messenger plus. It is not a virus or a trojan.

I would advice these people that this is not a virus, or a trojan, only adware that will place a search bar in internet explorer. Also inform them that they do not need to install the sponsor as they can choose to refuse the sponsor in the instalation by choosing the "I refuse" option:

It may also be necessary to warn them not to try a remove the so called virus because it can cripple msgplus.
If the adware is installed, and they would like to remove it, i would ask you to point them in direction of this file:
http://lop.com/new_uninstall.exe

that file will safely remove the sponsor from your system.

Thank you, if you have any other questions, feel free to ask :)

More effective is to go to Add/Remove Software, select Messenger Plus! to be removed and then choose the option "Remove sponsor and leave Messenger Plus! installed". Which should work on a clean installation of the adware, and not partly stripped by any spy/adware remover tha will only ruin the chance to uninstall it safely.

thanks for the quick reply folks.  i will make the download available again, and add text excerpted from below so they are aware of it. it seems a lot of the people were using avg.
