Ok Help My Mom by prashker on 09-22-2005 at 11:26 AM

First note

Mom+Computer=NOOB

My mom is really a new at PC's.

She finally got a Wireless Internet Card PCI. She just moved and got a old computer from her cousin.

It has Windows ME and I think that it has alot of viruses.

For Example.
When She opens IE she gets www.mysearchbar.com
Sometimes the screen goes black for a amount of time.

ok how do we fix that. She dosent have a fast connextion and I cant help her thru the phone because she explains to me weird things

Also she tries to Install MSN 7 but it says she cant install it because she dosent have IE 6. SO i sent her a emailo with the link to IE6 and i told her on the phone how to install. Well when she clicked download in IE she got a Runtime Error. And it closed IE.

So i told her to get firefox (which was already on the PC)

I told her to download the setup for IE onto her desktop with firefox.
No runtime error.
She opened the setup. Started installing it and when the instalation finished it said"instalation failed" and said some components werent installed. Then it told us to restart. So she did. But it was still IE 5.

So first question.
Viruses. How can I make her et rid of em the Noob way. She wont know how to use a Antivirus

MSN How do we install?

IE 6 how do we install?

Im going to her place in December so ill bring a XP CD.
Antivirus Progs
etc.

What should I bring for her for just a simple protection for her PC.

Because all she is going to do is look for a job on the net and go on hotmail to check her email and go onto MSN.

I think I missed something but I got to go to school now.
Will edit maybe later.

well if your mum doesnt no much it wont really help seeing as she wont know how to use an antivirus, which i think in my opinion is the easiest way. i also thought of formatting and mayb upgrading to XP?

i think your best chance is to get her to use an antivirus software. once thats done you can try installing IE.

for a list of simple programs you could have:

antivirus (norton, mcafee, etc.)
anti spyware/adware (adware se, spybot)
firewall (i use sygate and its pretty good)

do a bit of research about the programs. look at reviews and see which one you think is best

what program that is pretty small in size that lets me take over her PC so i can fix ti remotely?

EDIT: That is really easy to setup on her side

EDIT2: Thats free and takes little disk space.

Open a remote assistance connection between your computer and hers and do it yourself ;)

I don't think you need to open any connections.  From the sound of things everything is already open and junk is flooding in! :P

Windows ME hey?  Speaking as someone who has had the, err, 'pleasure' of using that operating system, I can honestly say that this is half your problem!  Seriously consider Windows XP.  Seriously.  Then of course add/enable the major 3:  Antivirus, Antispyware and Firewall.
