Laptop DEAD - HELP by M73A on 09-22-2005 at 07:35 PM

my girlfriend has a laptop and it wont boot up at all

it wont boot in safe mode either.... so she doesnt know what to do...

she gets an error saying somehting about newly installed software or hardware.... but nothings been installed that doesn't work so what could that be?

what could you suggest she do seeing as she cant get into safe mode???

it would be really appreciated if someone could suggest a way that does not involve a format because there is a lot of data that would be lost and probably not replaceable

Thanks for any Help.

Not to be rude but, that isn't very helpful. Can you give us a more detailed message?

ermm, im not sure... when its loading up it gets to a certain point and then goes back to the screen saying windows didn't start up propoerly how would you like to start windows etc etc 1safe mode 2 normally 3 old settings... ya no?

but im not sure what 'certain point' is.... i think its after the windows loading logo if thats what you mean...

I would suggest you consider a repair install - it's actually a useful feature, and you shouldn't lose any files or programs.

It would be a good idea if you could provide us with the Stop error code on the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). It will say Stop 0x000000somethingsomething(parameter,paramater,parameter,parameter)

This will help us actually point you in the direction on how to fix it because reparing install could be a worse thing since the laptop probably didn't originally have SP2 on it.

If windows starts poking its nose, then it has POSTed and is not a crucial hardware failure. Sounds like windows is corrupted or maybe a bad harddrive

yea... thats what she's been trying but the disc she got with her pc doesn't show that option... but the manuel says it should.... im gonna try and get hold of another disk of xp (actuial xp disk instead of EI Systems xp branded thing...)
