GIANT SQUID PHOTOGRAPHED
A mythical monster of the deep has for the first time been observed and photographed in its wild habitat.

Japanese researchers captured images of a 26ft giant deep sea squid attacking bait at a depth of almost 3,000 feet.

The creature became snagged on a hook and in its struggle to get away, left behind one of its 16ft-long tentacles.

The giant squid, Architeuthis, is the stuff of sea legend.

For hundreds of years, mariners have told tales of ships being attacked by the creatures and of their epic battles with sperm whales.

But in reality little is known about the elusive animals, which spend most of their time far below the ocean surface.

In the past century, only about 50 specimens, or their body parts, have been recovered, either washed up on beaches or caught on fishing lines.

Despite repeated attempts, no-one until now has managed to see a giant squid swimming in its natural environment.

The Japanese scientists tracked the movement of sperm whales to find a likely location for giant squid.

I love stories like this! It's always Japanese scientists though?

I remember when Japanese scientists sinking a dumpster filled with fishguts and meat into the marianer grave in the pacific ocean put down a video camera into the trench with some bait on it. After a while fish began to scatter and then they saw what they suspected to be a HUGE shark. But, the footage hasn't been released

Saw this on one of the news site here...

If someone already found a 18mt dead squid back in 1960-something, this 8mt squid must be a "teen"... :P

Well, those pics kinda suck, because you can't tell how big the squid is... there's nothing to compare it to... :-/

RE: Giant Squid Photographed - 26ft long by user27089 on 09-28-2005 at 02:16 PM

Who says that there aren't that many around, last time I checked there are dozens getting beached every month, there must be a lot, otherwise they would be extinct... I think they're just hiding :p.

I believe squids are plotting against us... They are all the way down in the ocean, and one day they'll come up and kill us all...

and this picture is unfair as WDZ correctly said, nothing to prove it with, they could have just took a picture of anything...

RE: Giant Squid Photographed - 26ft long by L. Coyote on 09-28-2005 at 04:08 PM

Well, obviously those people must know what is the range their camera can reach, the rest is just calculations. It's not that difficult to measure things on camera.

Cool pics and story. Thanks for posting that. Has anyone seen on Wild Boys when they were looking at dead specimens of giant squid? it was too funny.
