Installing Windows Vista on VMWare by Mike on 10-01-2005 at 12:01 PM

Hello.

I tried installing windows Vista beta 2 on VMWare 4.
This is the configuration I used:

OS: Microsoft Windows Longhorn (experimental)
RAM: 512 MB
HDD: IDE 0:0 10 GB
Bridged Network

Now, the setup can see the HDD, can click next, but after some secs when the installation starts, this message appears: "Setup was unable to locate attached hard drive suitable for holding temporary setup files"
I tried searching google, it says that I need an 8+ GB HDD to install it...
There is also this thread on VMWare's forum: http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?threa...0&start=0&tstart=0

Someone says that if you format the HDD with Windows Server 2k3 it will work, but I don't know...

Can anyone help?

By the way, I will try and upgrade to the latest version soon and see what happens...

Thank you... :)

you can try formatting the virtual drive with xp or 2000 before installing vista, i think this is an issue thats been around for awhile, probably because ms dosnt want people installing vista.

Did u try to format it as FAT and then reformat as NTFS with the Vista installer? (like it says on the link u posted)

Or u could try to fromat it to NTFS with the XP install cd, dunno if that would work.

Try with VmWare 5, 4 is going to give you driver problems ;)

Hi,

WinFS is imho a really interesting one filesystem. I ve searched over to find more info on it and came upon this source. If you wish, you might also give it a glance.
