Graphics Programs, what are you using? by PenguinBoy on 10-08-2005 at 09:30 PM

Hidy hey, i'm pretty fluent in using macromedia fireworks. but i'm almost too aware that adobe photoshop would be a better program.

just wondering what everyone else uses.

i tried out photoshop once but it was so fustrating looking for fireworks functions. i felt like an ameteur lol. are the benefits worth the effort, or are they simmilar programs?

RE: Graphics Programs, what are you using? by user27089 on 10-08-2005 at 09:51 PM

Adobe Photoshop 7.0, I have Fireworks, I prefer it for cartoon type work, as the outcomes of it are more cartoon style than anything.

RE: Graphics Programs, what are you using? by brian on 10-08-2005 at 09:52 PM

Adobe Photoshop CS2, haven't tried others but it floats my boat.

RE: Graphics Programs, what are you using? by hmaster on 10-08-2005 at 09:54 PM

RE: Graphics Programs, what are you using? by PenguinBoy on 10-08-2005 at 10:09 PM

the old ones were just so tedious. fireworks was pretty easy to learn, as soon as u figure out the general layout, and what does what, everything just suddenly falls into place and fluency prevails.

doesn't photoshop have WAY more filters etc?

RE: Graphics Programs, what are you using? by M73A on 10-08-2005 at 10:12 PM

Photoshop CS2.... i really like its user interface im just so used to it now... also have paint shop pro 10, gimp and fireworks

RE: Graphics Programs, what are you using? by PenguinBoy on 10-08-2005 at 10:13 PM

back in the old days i used to use microsoft word to create gradients, and peice graphics together using mspaint. that really forces you to learn allot. and microsoft photo editor for added effects and colour filtering. I figured out some lush techniques, made me feel quite proud to get such nice images without an actual graphics program.

RE: Graphics Programs, what are you using? by Reaper on 10-08-2005 at 10:52 PM

RE: Graphics Programs, what are you using? by Joe on 10-09-2005 at 02:15 AM

Photoshop 7.0... the transition is a bit tough,,, but you'll like it... and CS/CS2 try too hard...
7.0's great.

why is paint a security flaw?

also, what are these initials, i'm afraid i'm not sure what they stand for: GTK+, GD,

they're all easilly obtainable off limewire, or my mate jack (he gets me loads of programs of file sharing thingies). or infact fireworks is available off the macromedia website and the keygens are easy to find on limewire.
in my eyes it's only moraly wrong if you can afford them, but refuse to pay... but that's a different argument.

RE: Graphics Programs, what are you using? by gif83 on 10-09-2005 at 04:42 PM

i use photoshop but paint is fine for many things... in fact paint can pretty much generate any picture (not sure about semi-transparencies though) after all any picture is really just a bunch of pixels on your screen.. but we all want to save time so we get some processes automated for us... photoshop may be overkill for many simple tasks but it does speed up some lengthy tasks.

anyways.. it's not really the program that matters it's what you do with it that counts... you can achieve far more by actually learning to use a program to it's full extent than by just getting a "better program" and not bothering to learn the functions it provides.

hmm, i get the feeling i've posted this before.. anyways i was bored and thought i should contribute.

GTK+ is a multi-platform toolkit for creating graphical user interfaces. It is part of the GNU Project (was launched to develop a complete UNIX like operating system which is free software - GNU/Linux systems).

GD is an open source code library for creating images (PNG, JPEG and GIF images, among other formats).

RE: Graphics Programs, what are you using? by Tasha on 10-09-2005 at 05:04 PM

Um, I use Photoshop CS2, Bryce 5 (occassionally), Macromedia Fireworks, Macromedia Flash, The Gimp (occassionally) and Paint (occassionally). All of these are very good programs, so long as you take the time to learn them. It's all well and good saying Paint is terrible, but it can actually be incredibly good for simple tasks. I find most programs terrible for the simple cropping of images, takes to long to load, but Paint loads quickly and easily, and it takes up less time to do anything.
It really depends what your main purpose is for using a graphics program for... If it's simple things, I suggest Paint, or maybe The Gimp for such things. If you want to go into more detailed and harder work, use Photoshop or Fireworks, but there is no guarantee that you will be able to make amazing things as soon as you have installed it. It's not the program, it's the way the user uses and interprets the program.

RE: Graphics Programs, what are you using? by YottabyteWizard on 10-09-2005 at 06:35 PM

Fireworks for almost all my projects (very nice effects, fast, usefull when starting a graphic design from scratch and alpha channel editing), Photoshop CS2 as secondary (only when i need some effects fireworks doesnt have) and Paint for pixel editing (and for editing SNES/NES/GB game sprites for animatios :P and RPG Maker)

RE: Graphics Programs, what are you using? by Vazza on 10-09-2005 at 06:45 PM

I used Photoshop 6 (yes I know its onld but newer is always better) for most of my work, although haven't done as much recently due to other things. Its the only graphics program I've sat down and learned about. Use paint for very minor things, but mainly Photoshop 6

RE: Graphics Programs, what are you using? by ~INVASION~ on 10-09-2005 at 08:29 PM

Photoshop CS2 and 6 (6at school), fireworks 8 and 4 (4 at skool)

RE: Graphics Programs, what are you using? by PenguinBoy on 10-09-2005 at 10:38 PM

yeah, i haven't tried the adobes, but i've allways printed from microsoft photo editor. you can adjust the exact measurements of an image etc etc, and see how it can fit on the page, adjust wherabouts on the paper it will go etc. and it loads quickly.

some times oldschool is best.

bad workman blames his tools eh!

RE: Graphics Programs, what are you using? by lizard.boy on 10-09-2005 at 11:01 PM

i use photoshop cs2 at home, its always open - if i could minimise it to the tray i would :D

RE: Graphics Programs, what are you using? by RebelSean on 10-10-2005 at 03:38 AM

paint is a security flaw or risk because it can open file extentions that dont exist, making it easy for people with bad intentions to spread a virus getting past anti-virus programs easly.

1. anti virus programs scan files on creation, not when they are opened
2.
code:
---------------------------
Paint
---------------------------
<file>
Paint cannot read this file.
This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Agreed, Paint can only open files if they really are images (like W98 times when the only way to change boot screen logo was opening some .DLLs with paint or any graphic program), but rather than this it won't open them. Paint doesn't care about extensions, it cares only for file format.
