PC still running slow by Chris4 on 10-09-2005 at 08:25 PM

My computer has run alot slower then it is at present.. but what I can't understand is why it still runs slow?

My friend has a cheaper computer then mine, with slower processor, less memory etc. yet he can run games like Medal of Honor Allied Assault, with no troubles. Yet when I run a game like America's Army, it runs slow.

I've tried everything in the past year, and it is better now than it was.
Anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc. It seem's i've tried it all, but it sitll runs slow?

My friend, he can run MSN Messenger, Anti-virus and many other programs at the same time, while running Medal of Honor, and its still fine.
Yet even when I close every single program possible and run a game like that, it still runs slow?? And I have a better computer than him.

Any ideas?

Check for viruses, spyware, adware... everything like that... and I guess it all depends on what you all got on your computer too... I have a bunch of MP3s... and yeah, my computer runs alot slower because of them.

The reasons can be anything, from hardware to software to whatever!

* bad bios settings
* graphics card
* graphics memory
* type of memory
* amount of memory
* HDD access speed
* HDD seek speed
* HDD free space
* drivers
* cpu
* windows version
* programs installed/running in the background
* monitoring programs
* corrupt or too small pagefile
* registry settings
* windows services
* etc...
* etc...
* and the list can go on and on and on  and on  and on .... and on :p

Computer speed is extremely relative and it is by no means that a faster cpu means a faster computer.

I can own a big expensive fast car, yet when I don't perform regular maintenance and don't know how to set things correctly, a fine tuned DAF could still win on the race track...

Thanks for your help guys.

* bad bios settings - not sure
* graphics card - [see below]
* graphics memory - not sure
* type of memory - not sure
* amount of memory - 512MB ?
* HDD access speed - not sure
* HDD seek speed - not sure
* HDD free space - 89GB
* drivers - I think they are fine
* cpu - not sure
* windows version - 5.1
* programs installed/running in the background - MSN Messenger / Anti-virus ?
* monitoring programs - not sure
* corrupt or too small pagefile - not sure
* registry settings - not sure
* windows services - not sure

As you can see, I don't know if most of the above is fine.. so if anyone could help my out there?

I don't know the exact Graphics Card I have...
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX Integrated GPU

RE: PC still running slow by Chris4 on 10-11-2005 at 07:44 PM

would this [link] or this [link] be ok for my computer? It's the ATI Radeon 9200 you reccomeneded.

Can someone explain what everything means, please?
Sorry, but i'm a 'noob' at these kind of things.

quote:
It is an ATI Radeon 9200 128MB DDR 8X AGP VGA card with video in / video out. This card is compatible with 4X and 8X AGP slot.
Would someone mind explaining what "128MB DDR" "8X AGP VGA" and "video in / video out" is, please? And the basics I need to know?

Sorry for all the questions *-)*-)

Thanks very much if you answer them.

ATI Radeon 9200 - A good graphics card
128MB DDR - 128 Megabytes of Random-Access memory (RAM), a standard base amount
8X AGP VGA card - the slot inside your computer where the video card will go
video in / video out - you can see video coming out of your computer (e.g. on a camera, TV) as well as send video into your computer (e.g. camera, DVD player)
