Problems with CNET Websites! by Chris4 on 10-09-2005 at 11:45 PM

It seems all websites owned by CNET do not exist.

Firefox

www.download.com screenshot
www.cnet.com screenshot
www.com.com screenshot
www.news.com screenshot

And I get "The page cannot be displayed" In Internet Explorer

I've had this for ages. Its up and down. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I think i've posted here before aobut this, but got no solution.
It seems no one else has this problem but me ?
I don't understand it.. ?

Thats Internet Explorer's way of telling you it can't open it because of DNS problems. It happens quite often for me sometimes also, on certain websites. I don't know if this might help, but you can try it. In the command prompt type "ipconfig /flushdns". That will clear your DNS list, and get a new one from your ISP's server. If that doesn't help, get firefox :p.

Well, if you look carefully, I did say the screenshots are from Firefox..

Thanks for your help, I tried what you said and even after restart, no help.

also check the HOSTS file for entries blocking download.com. are you running a firewall?

can you try pinging download.com? (type "ping www.download.com" in a command prompt) and give the IP address you're getting (between [])

I'm running Windows Firewall only, which is not blocking any websites.
I tried pinging, the command promp came up for about 20 seconds, then disapeared?

Can you connect to http://216.239.115.131

If you can, that means that you have DNS resolving problems... :-/

type "cmd" in the run box and then try pinging. typing "ping download.com" in a command prompt is not executing "ping download.com" from the run box. :dodgy:

Oops.. sorry, didn't completely read it.

I get this when I type that in cmd...
"Ping Request could not find download.com. Please check the name and try again"

traxor, can you please don't post about your own configuration, we know it's working, that's why he posted... and he already tried in IE, no luck...

you can use HOSTS to manually configure the server IP... click here to know how to do it.

basically you just have to add this line to the file

code:
download.com 216.239.115.148
www.download.com 216.239.115.148
cnet.com 216.239.115.131
www.cnet.com
if you need more IP addresses, just ask.

also note that this is a temporary issue and you should consider contacting your ISP about possible problems.

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
How do I edit that file? I tried in notepad but then it just saves as host.txt and doesnt replace the file.

edit: Woo! Done it! Replaced the hosts file with the one provided on the site and Viola! works!

Hopefully thats the end of it and won't have any more problems!!!

Thanks everyone!!!
