Would it be possible to ask that the current tab be highlighted more than using just a bold title ? I would like to see a coloured background for the highlighted tab, as the strength of the bold varies on certain monitors and with certain display settings.

Well I understand your point, but a different background could be annoying. The bold text and the "stronger" border of the rectangule looks nice and clean.

it might, but its just too hard to see. I know several people from lists that have already typed the wrong message to the wrong person, as its not clear enough which tab is at the forfront.
Clean and simple doesnt always make for good design.

Ive been playing around with photo-pap here, and you can keep the clear and simple look and still get definition by reducing the opacity of the tab background, so its the same colour as the background window, but a different shade.

I think firefox's noia 2.0 extreme theme's tab is so beautiful.
