Me, too.

The specs are just more compelling.
Maybe you want to share the price of both systems in the store you'll buy from?
RE: Determine which is better by -dt- on 10-14-2005 at 07:31 AM

Toshiba its smaller , weighs less  and like everything is better.

RE: Determine which is better by YottabyteWizard on 10-14-2005 at 03:57 PM

4th in a row... Toshiba! Very very good quality from them.

RE: Determine which is better by wj on 10-14-2005 at 07:06 PM

Blah. I hate toshiba.

I hate HP for the most part too.....

Go buy a dell and be happy.

RE: Determine which is better by Supersonicdarky on 10-14-2005 at 07:19 PM

toshiba
everything better but cpu. unless you play alot of gamez, no need for the 2.8

- CPU speed is lower (although the more memory can compensate this; depends on how you set up both PC's)
- Graphics are worse (it contains version "1.0", while the other is "2.0"; although for all you know the Toshiba could also be 'SE', to know this exactly you need the actual detailed specs and not the advertised stuff.)

Another thing I would like to know before buying any of them: What are the HDD speeds? (random seeking time, access time, spinning RPM, cache amount) These are often the most critical factor in overall speed-tables as the HDD is almost always the slowest component.

Also, what type and speed of RAM is that 512MB or that 1GB. One can be seriously slower than the other, etc...

In other words, before I say Toshiba or HP, I would like to see the exact, detailed and complete specs of all the components and not just the advertised stuff or the stuff you find important ;)

(edit: and of course the price :p)

HP, need to see the price

RE: Determine which is better by Hybrid on 10-15-2005 at 06:48 AM

Ok, heres the information about the Toshiba and HP.
The thing is- I want to play games. Games like:

Guild Wars
Warcraft(not world of warcraft)
Diablo II
Sims 2
and maybe even The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. But I'm not in that big of a hurry to get it.

So I'm not looking for the most über grahpics, just enough to keep me company. Also, my price range is very, very limited.  1,799.99 is basically pushing the limit here. But I'm willing.

Heres the links, finally.

HP       Toshiba

Keep in mind that I'm looking for good performance and good graphics. For my price range atleast.

toshiba(Y)

If you went for the hp then id get 512mb of rammore, i reccomend hp!

exactly what I would say...

Although the Toshiba seems better, it is slower as far as I can tell (although it has a slightly faster HDD)...

Thus, I also would buy the HP with an extra 512MB of mem...
RE: Determine which is better by surfichris on 10-15-2005 at 01:18 PM

Err. You do realise you've fallen into the megahertz myth and are comparing a P4 2.8ghz with a Pentium M 2.0ghz?

You do know the Pentium M is probably faster than the P4 overall, right?

[edit]The Pentium M processor line is designed for low power consumption and maximum performance. If you're going to be games, the Pentium M processor would beat the P4 hands down - look at benchmarks of them at the moment.

RE: Determine which is better by Nathan on 10-15-2005 at 02:37 PM

Maybe, but the hp has hyper thread and this is relivently newer technonlgy ( i think) it means you can run more programs/games without using all the power!
I still think hp with extra 512mb of ram

P.S Ram is relitivly cheap you can get elixer 512mb for £25 aria, yo'll need to chech what type it is though

EDIT: It has a better screen as well its high definition this means smaller pixels for pinpoint accuracy and clearness
Plus it has a faster bus speed!

Hyperthreading isn't new anymore and it's certainly not newer than Pentium M/Centrino technology!

It doesn't mean you can run more programs and grames without using more power. Its for multithreaded applications.

Do some research before you reply to something like this.

Oh, and you cant get laptop RAM for £25, especially for 512mb so do some more research on that too.
RE: Determine which is better by Nathan on 10-15-2005 at 02:51 PM

ebay you can :P

Not really, at least not to my sources (which can of course be wrong)

True, a pentium M is relativly faster than a P4. But according to some graphs I've seen the P4 2.8Ghz is still a tick faster than a Pentium M 2.0Ghz (not much).

But we indeed didn't mention that the Pentium M is far more power sufficient and all (so your battery will last longer).

(this said, this was according to the stuff I've looked up)

The price was my main argument to go with HP though... If the price would be the same, I'd go for the Toshiba.

http://support.intel.com/support/processors/mobile/pm/sb/CS-007967.htm

From that chart - you'll see the P4-M's have a 1mb cache (well, this one would) whilst this same Centrino has the 2mb cache. The other features such as dedicated stack manager, EIS technology make the CPU outperform the P4-M quite easily.

I don't have the time to find the time to find it right now but somewhere on the Intel site is their cross comparison chart of the Pentium M vs P4 line with comparisons of the speed. Basically it states a 1.7ghz Centrino/Pentium M is the equiv. of a P4 2.6ghz.

For business/office applications, the Pentium-M is unbeatable, clearly outperforming the fastest mobile Pentium 4 at 2.40GHz. When dealing with games and media encoding applications, the Pentium 4 will be faster, but by no means will it be able to offer the battery life of a Pentium-M based system.

Yes, I do agree when this is compared with equivalent Pentium 4 processors. But I'm not so sure that the Pentium M 2.0Ghz is so much faster than the P4 2.8Ghz...

But... I'm currently looking thru Intel's site...

EDIT: crap, Intel's site is so "non-searchable" so to speak. I can't find anything related to any comparisson charts...

anyways, if it turns out the Toshiba is a tick faster, I'd still buy the HP because of the price...Hence I'm curious in how much faster it is, with 3d games
RE: Determine which is better by user27089 on 10-15-2005 at 03:50 PM

I would definitely go for the HP, out of experience... The toshiba pc isn't much better, and is probably more expensive...

For £40, you could buy a stick of 512Mb DDR RAM and the PC would be amazing...

Intel Centrino Processors suck.

RE: Determine which is better by YottabyteWizard on 10-15-2005 at 04:26 PM

I hate more commercial brand like HP, Compaq, etc.
These always come with a lot of unnescesary software.. and OMG the process list is overcharged! I still hav e a Toshiba Satellite with 130 MBs of HDD, Windows 3.1 and B&W LCD :O never had a problem with it.

RE: Determine which is better by Nathan on 10-15-2005 at 05:02 PM

have you seen the hp battery though

Please do not generalize like that! We already had such generalization-discussions earlier this week. Read what it says. It goes about a certain specific batch of batteries which were malfunctionning. Tbh, this isn't such big extraordinary news at all and such stuff happens all the time in the industry. All this certainly does not mean that all HP batteries are bad!

PS: thekid and msg_plus_freak, may I ask to stop posting such long links? They seriously mess up everything in the thread. Use the proper URL-tags instead to make a link.
