Messenger Plus conflicting with something by StuL on 10-14-2005 at 11:05 PM

Hi all.

I recently formatted my computer and reinstalled MSN Messenger 7.5 and the latest version of Messenger Plus.  Since my reinstall, MSN Messenger has been freezing (apparently) randomly.  For example, I will be in the middle of typing and the program will freeze for approximately 5-10 seconds and then start working fine again.  This isn't just limited to one incident, it will happen multiple times.

I have narrowed the cause of the problem down to Messenger Plus.  Regardless of which version I have installed on my computer, the freezes always happen when Messenger Plus is installed.  I have tried installing versions 3.54, 3.60 and 3.61, all of which cause MSN Messenger to crash.

I have uninstalled any program which was not installed before I formatted yet I still have problems.  I have the following programs installed:

-  Microsoft Office 2003
-  Autoroute 2003
-  Nero 6.3
-  Tag&Rename
-  Windows Media Player 10
-  Azureus
-  Firefox
-  Limewire
-  NZB-O-Matic
-  Thunderbird
-  WS_FTP LE
-  iPod Updater
-  AVG free
-  Microsoft AntiSpyware
-  QuickTime
-  Adobe Reader 7.0
-  Any Password
-  TweakUI
-  WinRar

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this issue which has been giving me grief for almost a week now!  I can't manage without my Messenger Plus!

Thanks very much in advance

I don't know what the following programs do. Could you explain them a little? (i say that in case i think those programs could create a conflic with plus)

About your problem: go to plus > preferences > misc and tell us what is the hook method you're usgin (default, default-forced, alternative)

Also, do you use any plugin for plus? and any addon/plugin for messeger (apart from plus)?

Autoroute is a map program which can be used, amongst other things, to offer directions from A to B.

Tag&Rename is indeed an ID3 tag editor

Limewire is a P2P program

NZB-O-Matic is for decoding files from newsgroups

Any Password is a program which can store usernames and passwords for all the websites and forums I frequent!

The hook mode is set to Default

Nope, I don't use any plugins for MSN Messenger.

Nope!  (I hate the things!)

Thanks to everyone for their help so far.  Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this!

Hello all!

I believe I have resolved the problem!  I have Messenger Plus installed on my laptop and I altered some settings on there which I then imported to my computer after I had formatted.  The setting which was causing the crashes/freezes was the location to which my conversations were being saved to.  I've changed this to the correct location now and all appears to be working fine!

Thank you for all your input and help

Stu

what was the location that cused the problem and what is your current location? Was the first location a location of a shared folder? (a remote folder in a lan, for example)
RE: Messenger Plus conflicting with something by StuL on 10-15-2005 at 08:30 PM

The location which it was trying to save to was \\Stuart\Stu's Documents (Stuart being the name of the PC which I formatted).  When I formatted, I changed the name of the computer to Stuarts.  I would imagine that if I had kept the name as Stuart, there wouldn't have been a problem.

Hope that clears things up a little.

Ok ... then now i understand what happened :)

from time to time, plus saves the conversation and your plus tried to save it in \\Stuart\Stu's Documents . Then it has to find the computer called stuart and because you formatted it and changed its name, Plus can't find it, therefore plus freezed messenger a bit, while looking for a computer called stuart.

as a conclusion, i'd recomend to save the logs in a local folder;)

I don't know what it is, but the day before yesterday my messenger plus live was working great, and now whenever I restore/maximize the window it freezes the whole computer until I hit the windows key+m to go to the desktop, therefore minimizing the whole window. The computer works great after that, until I unminimize the messenger window at which point it freezes again. It freezes up so badly that the toggle keys, which I have turned on, lag. That really must be freezing a lot! Anyways, I haven't installed any new programs lately, but I do have a few of the programs mentioned here so far. WinRar, AVG free, adobe reader 7, bear share which is sort of like limewire but I just uninstalled that so never mind, 7zip which is basically the same thing as WinRar, winamp, ABC, which is a torent downloader, and a few other things. I ended almost all the processes on my username and it still freezes. If you have something to say, could you **please!** email me instead of replying to this? Just send an email to SimonJaeger@shaw.ca ... I just tried to put a link and it didn't work so I had to go back and edit it. Anyways, the thing is, I use a screen reader, and it's kinda hard to sort through all the posts people have made, let alone get back to this thread. So I would reallly apreciate it if you emailed me instead. Thanks. Oh, I have just gone back and edited it, so it should automatically notify me when an reply is posted.
