Not an Admin? by Chris4 on 10-31-2005 at 07:43 PM

Sometimes I get a message saying that i'm not an Admin, like this one I got earlier:

But as you can clearly see, I am an Administrator:

Any idea why this might happen?

Try logging on as the default Administrator account in Safe Mode.

basicly that will cut off even more access.

Does this happen on any other admin accounts?
RE: Not an Admin? by Jimcando on 10-31-2005 at 07:55 PM

I only said Safe Mode cause that's the only way to log onto the default Admin account isn't it?

I've only got 1 account and that's "Chris" which is Admin.

Actually no your wrong. Within Safe Mode there is a hidden Administrator account. This account has full privilliges to the system therefore it doesn't limit any access.

When you go to Control Panel > User Accounts > How many users does it show and under yuor name does it say Computer Administrator?

When you are in Safe Mode and logged into the Administrator Account goto User Accounts and click on your name Click on Change Account Type and make sure it is set to Computer Administrator.

This is what I get on my account (Chris)

And this on Administrator (Safe Mode)

nothing unusual there...

Are you using Vista or a skin? If you are using Vista it might be a bug in the OS.

RE: Not an Admin? by Chris4 on 10-31-2005 at 10:41 PM

I'm using Windows XP Home Edition, SP2, with Vista Skin.

It's not saying that you're not an admin. It is telling you that the operation you attempted failed, and it is possible that logging on as an admin will allow you to complete the operation.

You are, however, an admin, and have shown that with the screenshots that you posted. Thus I conclude that the suggestion is irrelevant, and that the failure has another reason.

I would guess that there is a file possibly missing, or a registry corruption, both having the result of having the system attempt to access a file which it cannot.

If you explain what it is that you are unable to do because of this error, perhaps someone or I can help you acheive that purpose with a different or altered method.

Try downloading TweakUI from the microsoft website, there is an option in there that allowed you to be able to log into the Administrator account without going into safe mode :)

its called something like: 'suppress Administrator account on welcome page' or something

That user might be corrupt in privilegies and stuff, I'll suggest remaking  that user, but first backup your documents, pictures, music, etc.

RE: Not an Admin? by Chris4 on 11-03-2005 at 04:27 PM

How can I remake the user?

Log onto the computer with Administrator account in safe mode, delete your account and then create it again. (Everything under c:\documents and settings\chris will be lost)
RE: Not an Admin? by Chris4 on 11-03-2005 at 04:34 PM

Ok thanks, i'll do that. Save all my stuff in C:/My Stuff or something ...

No, that is not correct. :dodgy: The "ASPNET" account is created when you install the Microsoft .NET Framework, and it is used for executing ASP.NET applications with limited privileges.
RE: Not an Admin? by lordy on 11-04-2005 at 05:14 AM

i havent got that account on my computer... i would have thought that seeing as though it's the only other one there it'd be the Admin one, but meh

I don't have "Administrator" listed in TweakUI either, but the account definitely exists. I think it might not be available in XP Home edition because you can't use it unless you're in safe mode anyway.

"ASPNET" is definitely not an admin account.
RE: Not an Admin? by lordy on 11-04-2005 at 06:44 AM

alrighty then disregard what i said ;)

I have the administrator option in my TweakUi but I'm using XP Pro. Must be exclusive to Pro.
