Still problems with CNET sites by Chris4 on 11-03-2005 at 02:22 PM

I'm still having problems with viewing CNET sites [Please see Old Thread before posting]

Unfortunately, the solution that worked is not working now.

I was told to put this in the hosts file:

216.239.115.148 download.com
216.239.115.148 www.download.com
216.239.115.131 cnet.com
216.239.115.131 www.cnet.com

When that is in the host file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts), I can ping the CNET sites and it's successful. When it is not in the hosts file, ping is unsuccessful.

So, I put the code in the hosts file and I get a successful ping from download.com. So when I try and view it, I get this:

And when the code isn't in the hosts file, the websites apparently doesn't exist.

It is the same in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera.

any (more) ideas? :P

Thanks in advance.

have you contacted your isp about this yet?

It's because the CSS is on some weird site. ( http://i.d.com.com/css/dl/dl_global.css )

65.200.201.174 i.d.com.com

try adding that to your hosts file.

No, I don't know how. I'm with NTL.

Thank you! It works :D

Don't see why I should have to go thorugh all this trouble though?

edit: had to put
65.200.201.174 dw.com.com
on the list aswell because when I clicked on something I wanted to download it said it didn't exist.

and i.i.com.com to make cnet.com work! this is stupid

basically i've got to add every subdomain to make it work... :|

cnet probably uses a lot of other things (eg: stylesheet) located on subdomains... and since the hosts file doesn't accept wildcards ;)
