BOOT Screens by mwe99 on 11-18-2005 at 10:15 PM

Can i legally modify my bootscreen? I know programs such as Style XP offer this, i was just wondering if it was legal home and business users etc?

Thanks!

its not really illegal. its just unsupported and sometimes risky. you can do it with a free bootscreen from stardock if you want to.

Yeah i read about that, i was just more concerned over does it invaidate the EULA (as i'd be using it at college/work), i checked out a copy but couldnt see anything specific.

i used to use that...

i did create my own using the proper programs etc etc... the right amount of colours but it still managed to crash my windows boot up.... can be sorted by going into safe mode but its still annoying that it happens!

i've only tested the stardock version in a virtual machine. it worked flawlessly (almost.. minor graphical glitch with the progress bar)

i wouldnt be Playing around with your Boot Screen, means disaster if you do that, unless you backup everything before doing so

RE: BOOT Screens by DJeX on 11-19-2005 at 12:53 AM

I've changed my boot screen many times and have had no problems.

I used a program called BookSkin by Stardock. http://www.stardock.com/products/bootskin/

RE: BOOT Screens by Pyro on 11-19-2005 at 12:55 AM

i have done my bootscreen and tryed moding it, skining it, that Xpize thing (i'm using a 64 bit computer), windows vista skin patch. ect. ect.

and my computer is F***ED!!!!!!!!!!

so my advise is:
DON'T DO IT!

but thats just me...

Yes it is... it requires patching of windows...
RE: BOOT Screens by Underlord on 11-19-2005 at 04:50 AM

It doesn't require any patching.

quote:
/BOOTLOGO
Use this switch to have Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 display an installable splash screen instead of the standard splash screen. First, create a 16-color (any 16 colors) 640x480 bitmap and save it in the Windows directory with the name Boot.bmp. Then add "/bootlogo /noguiboot" to the boot.ini selection.

Bootscreen changers patch ntoskrnl, they don't use /BOOTLOGO (which i've never even heard of :-/)
RE: BOOT Screens by Underlord on 11-19-2005 at 05:15 AM

Hmm. Well i haven't actually tried it. Someone might want to see if it works.

I have ALL stardock software, using everythign at the same time (almost everyhintg) and got no problems. BootSkin is safe. But i think it does patch. If you use BootSkin and the something (virus or anything (BootSkin doesnt mess anything and dont have a virus, im just giving some general examples)) mess up your computer, then you make a reinall of Windows OS then when you boot the original Windows Logo will afear for some seconds, and then it will change (while continue the loading of WIndows) to the new one.

EDIT: My point: i don't think it's legal.

RE: BOOT Screens by rav0 on 11-19-2005 at 12:20 PM

I second using BootSkin. There are heaps of boot screens for it published, and it is easy to make your own  as well.

They can have a slidey progress bar like the original one as well, the custon screens needn't be static.

BootSkin is legal.

The only way to do it illegally would be to break the EULA between you and Microsoft, and if you did, I doubt that Bill Gates would have you taken to court and sued. There is no law (that I know of) that prohibits personalising your Windows boot screen. Many jurisdictions invalidate the EULA anyway, but if you breach it, just keep it a secret :dodgy:.
