Sugg: Chat logs - better way to save? by just_a_name on 01-01-2006 at 03:16 PM

Hey,

Probably super simple to implement... and in my opinion it would be very worthwhile!

Instead of storing old chat logs in folders named "December 2005" for example, why not:
2005-11-Nov
2005-12-Dec
... etc

It is much harder to browse when u have something like:
January 2003
January 2004
January 2005
February 2003
February 2004
February 2005
... etc etc

Especially when for example, you're trying to following a conversation with a particular person during one year, sequentially through the months. The above suggestion would obviously keep the years together and the months in order.

Does that make sense? I think it would definitely be worth the small change in coding.

I would love to code a convertor, if I knew how!

That would actually be a better way of doing it, I like the idea (y). Let's hope Patchou puts it on his list of features he needs to code.

There is already an alternative. You can use Plus! Tweak! and the ArchiveFileDateFmt key to format the log files.

In order for this to work, you must change the options in Logging => Archiving to "Create a different directory for each file" (this will make a folder named after your contact's address and the log files with the date format you specify).

Example:
Folder "ChatLogs"
Subfolder "myfriend@someplace.com"
File "18-12-2004.txt"
File "19-12-2004.txt"
and so on...

I like it the way it is, easier to read. I just make some more folders and name then 2005, 2004, 2003 and so on.
