laptop messed by -dt- on 01-02-2006 at 09:10 AM

well today i booted my moms laptop and it says..

Windowws could not start because the following file is missing
or corrupt:
<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
please reinstall a copy of the above file.

when booting so i made a bootdisk to boot into it but i cant access anything other than the A drive =/

any ideas what to try?

its windows xp and a toshiba satellite laptop

edit:

whats a good live cd linux distro that would let me access the files / burn them to cd?

You could try to use your floppy drive to get dos. Then use that to access your cd rom drive and replace ntoskrnl.exe (which also has your boot screen btw .... welll boot info basically afaik)

Mabbe that would work. Or you could always boot from a cd and reinstall/repair windows :)

You said you had access to A drive correct ?? So there is a way (that dont remember) to use your cdrom (you cant access cd-roms directly so you need to insert some floppy or type something).

If nothing works and you have to format your hdd then you could always copy all important files from your laptop to your pc 8-)

or
cd c:/

I think your c: is corrupted. It happened to me 2 times. I had to format c:

Cant you connect it to another machine and copy the files ??

Try using Knoppix, I've used it a few times to get data off a machine that won't boot.

Is the HDD file system NTFS?
If yes, then you should use a NTFS Bootdisk (you can also try this if the above doesnt work)  because normal bootdisks can't access NTFS file systems :) (the only command you can use is fdisk :P)
