RE: Alienware Sucks by s7a5 on 01-09-2006 at 11:18 AM

now i'm not really sure
When I was choosing a laptop my friend discouraged me from buying Alienware cuz he had enormous problems with it, at first I didnt believe but now the picture is getting clearer.

Besides bc it produces constant noise, it is automatically not for me. I need a quite environmnet to work on my tunes.

Horror stories like that happen to every brand. I worked at a place for a few months (internship) where they sell mainly HP/Compaq. You won't believe everything i saw there. We didn't only have problems with their regular customer support, but also with their business and server support (those are totally separated from customer support).

For example: a brand new topline 19inch rack server that need to be delivered to a client the next day was DOA. So we called HP and they promised to deliver a new one before the end of the day. The end of the day HP comes like promised... another DOA!! They didn't even test that one before they brought it to us.

Same kind of thing happened with a DOA 17inch monitor... first time they brought the wrong model, then another DOA, then another wrong model. Then we called and told them to double check the model AND test it before the shipped it and it finally went right :).

We had a HP repair guy onsite asking us how to enter the BIOS of some server :s.

etc., etc. Same kind of stories happened with the much less IBMs, Sonys and brandless systems we sold there.

But that doesn't mean I won't buy HP anymore, this type of things happen to every brand. You're just unlucky when you're one of those that have such problems. Around 97% are still happy users.

But i won't buy an alienware laptop anyway, they are desktop replacements, not laptops you easily take with you. Just buy a nice desktop that you can upgrade after a while.

if they were that bad they wouldnt have as much reputation as they have now. you cant just start a company with heapz of rep, you have to earn it.

RE: Alienware Sucks by dotNorma on 01-09-2006 at 01:45 PM

To be honest, there isnt anything so good that sets Alienware appart from any other company. All they do is manufacture cases and put stuff in them, apart from that they arent any different from dell.

And these horror storys are out for every company. (Ive seen several on these forums).

Just configure your own computer..

I did, and im happy.

Of course if you are talking about a laptop.. thats a different story.

If you really want something cool, get a Liebermann: http://www.go-l.com/home/index.htm

Especially their displays :).

i lke the idea that alienware configure everything, install the basics and use alienwiring to increase the airflow within the case: very neat and tidy. Although, i still wouldnt buy one (im building my own )

It's called rounded cables and can be bought in every good PC parts shop :).

I've been with my compaq presario for about 2 years now. I'm pretty happy with it.

I did  have to change the hard drive, but of course that was because of me dropping my laptop about 12 times.

I wouldn't exactly call a nVidia 7800GTX crap, nor would I ever say something like that about AMD Athlon 64 or AMD Athlon 64 X2 !
They're fancy cases with GREAT hardware inside...

Furthermore the Site states:
"some creative pcmcia external soundcard "solution" that was supposed to substitute for a functioning internal soundcard"
The funny thing is, the only PCMCIA solution I can see with the laptops is the SoundBlaster one, which is an UPGRADE to the internal sound card and is BETTER, and costs 99$ MORE...
I'd be glad if they sent me that as a replacement :/

Dell doesn't make nice cases, dell doesn't put in high-end hardware, dell doesn't pay attention to silencing...

that would hardly be fair saying that: im sure that you choose the things that go inside your PC, if you choose the crap cheap stuff its your problem, not Alienware's!

I was really interested in alienware thinking it looks good and wanted to experiment and have a try on one of their machines but reading this has put me off completely.

The monitors rule! I am desperate to get hold of one.

Are these available for purchase and is there a price tag on any of them? I cannot seem to find it.
RE: Alienware Sucks by Menthix on 01-09-2006 at 10:27 PM

I don't know, the store on their own site doesn't seem to work or provide prices. And google brought up PC Maker Liebermann Shuts the Doors.. But that's news from 10/14/2004, and the Liebermann site itself has news up to 10/26/2005.

I'm sure they aren't cheap :).

RE: Alienware Sucks by Destruction on 01-09-2006 at 10:34 PM

Does anywhere else do monitors like these ?

RE: Alienware Sucks by CookieRevised on 01-09-2006 at 11:46 PM

There once was a thread on this forum about those displays long time ago (including prices -which will curl your toes :p-), maybe it still exists, search for it I would say ;)

found it already: multiscreen monitors

RE: Alienware Sucks by PenguinBoy on 01-10-2006 at 12:59 AM

Leibermann went bust, in about 2004 i think, because their computers were too expensive + advanced so they didn't sell enough. but last year they got a whole load of funding from Firari, who have experience of selling specialised things which the everyday person can not afford.

however since then i haven't seen much activity on their website and not any public advertising... to me it looks like they've got something good... they're just not pushing it atall it seems! Which is obvious because hardly anyone has heard of them! Half the website is in accessable and u get 404s too. Annoying. However they came under a new indipendant director in october last year, and he looks very promising, i cant wait to see what comes of it.

It's not just the screens that rock... my favourite feature of theirs is PuRam.  Which is like a big 10Gig ram-like drive which can hold the whole of windows and its processes, which means the computer never has to start up, u just press "on" and also means that the actual ram is completely free for other processes, and anything you do will be practically instantanious.

Theye developed their own linux based OS which id like to see more information on. but yeah, struggling at the forefront.
