IrDA = Infrared Data Association

Infrared Data Association: an organisation that defines the infrared communications protocol. A protocol used by many laptops and mobile cellular phones to exchange data at short ranges.

No no no!
What you are talking about is WiFi which is a completly diffrent thing!
The only similarity between them is that they are both wireless.

The Infrared Data Association (IrDA) defines physical specifications communications protocol standards for the short range exchange of data over infrared light, for uses such as personal area networks (PANs).

With the infrared you can (wirelessly) exchange data from one pocket pc to another, or from your pc to the pocket pc, or from your cell phone to the pocket pc, etc.

It is like a remote control for your television; nothing to do with internet what-so-ever.

Compare if you will with Bluetooth, another kind of wireless short range communication system for devices...
