Is it recomended to port forward MSN? by prashker on 01-28-2006 at 08:33 PM

I remember a post a time back with a quote from cookie saying the ports on MSN (which i have been trying to find out for some time)

quote:
The full list of Messenger ports:
Basic text messaging/connection to Messenger server: port 1863 or 80 TCP and 443 TCP
File Transfer*: 6891-6900 TCP (this port range is not valid for MSN Messenger 6 clients sending/receiving to other MSN Messenger 6 clients)
Webcam**/*: 9000-9999 or 80 TCP
Audio*: 5004-65535 UDP
Video Conference (XP only)/Start Camera*: 5004-65535 UDP
Remote Assistance (XP only)*: 3389 TCP
Whiteboard/Application Sharing (XP only)*: 1503 TCP
Launch Site Games**: 80 TCP
* denotes features which can use Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), UPnP file transfer only available in Windows Messenger 5, MSN Messenger 5 and MSN Messenger 6
** MSN Messenger 6 feature exclusively
Now the questions
Do I really need to port forward em?

Is there more chance of recieving viruses/other bad stuff?

If I need too which are most needed?

Thanks in advance,
SonicSam

PS: Are these the same ports for WLM? because I use wlm. and I am not going to forward ports WLM dont even use :P

Well, if everything's working now, you don't need to touch anything. :P

If something doesn't work, then just forward the ports you need.

Only change something on the open ports if a program asks for it or if a program (MSN Messenger in this case) isn't able to connect to the server. There's no bigger chance of getting a virus or so.

The ones most needed depends on what feature of MSN Messenger doesn't work.

I don't know if WLM 8 uses the same ports.

Alright then i guess I should only forward Whiteboard and Application sharing because those do not work for me (I have Windows Messenger it just never connects)
